Importance of raksha potli
In Jain tradition, “raksha potli” is a small sacred pouch (usually red or yellow cloth) tied on the wrist after certain pooja, havan or special vidhi.
What it usually contains
Depending on the pooja, it may contain things like:- Vaskshep / akshat (rice mixed with saffron or sandal)
- Small beads / gomti chakra / etc.
- Sometimes a small paper with mantras written on it
It is generally “abhimantrit” (energised) by a Jain sadhu/sadhvi or by proper mantra-chanting during pooja, and then tied to the hand.

Its importance in Jain viewpoint
- Symbol of Protection (Raksha)
- It is worn with the bhav: “May I be protected from negative influences, fear, and obstacles while I walk on the path of dharma.” - The real protection in Jain dharma comes from own punya, right faith and right conduct. The potli is only an outer symbol of that inner protection.
- Reminder of Pooja & Vows
- When you see it on your wrist, it reminds you: - I have done this special pooja/havan. - I should keep my vrats, avoid paap, and live carefully (samyak jeevan). - So it works as a constant spiritual reminder in daily life.
- Strengthening Faith (Shraddha)
- For many, it increases bhakti towards: - Arihant–Siddha Bhagwan - Shasan Dev–Devi (e.g. Padmavati, etc., depending on tradition) - This bhakti gives mental courage, peace and confidence. A fearless, peaceful mind itself is a big “raksha”.
- Prabhavna & Sanskar
- Often raksha potlis are distributed in prabhavna after a big pooja. - Children and family learn from this: - Respect for pooja - Love for Jain symbols and dharma - Thus it helps in passing Jain sanskar to the next generation.

Scriptural / traditional note
- Agam granths mainly teach that real protection is:
- Raksha potli is a later devotional practice (laukik parampara) followed in many Jain households and derasars.
- Both Shwetambar and Digambar traditions have similar ideas of raksha dhaga/potli in some poojas, though:

Very important Jain understanding
- Potli itself does not cancel karma.
- It is useful if:
- Then it becomes a support (sahayak upay) for your inner spiritual progress.
In simple words: Raksha potli is a sacred reminder and symbol of protection; the true raksha comes from your own pure thoughts, good karmas, and walking on the path shown by Jain Tirthankars.
