Here is the simple Jain story of Vastupal and Tejpal:

1. Who were Vastupal and Tejpal?

• They were two Jain brothers, very brave and wise.
• They lived in Gujarat and were ministers in the court of King Vir Dhavala (Viradhaval).
• Tejpal was also a great army commander.
• Both were deeply devoted to Jain Dharma, did regular samayik, pratikraman, and used their wealth in dharma-dāna (religious charity) and lok-kalyan (welfare of all).

2. Their families

• Vastupal’s wife: often mentioned as a religious and virtuous lady.
• Tejpal’s wife Anupama (Anupamā-devī) was very intelligent, soft‑spoken, compassionate and had great faith in Jain religion.
• Both couples lived with unity and respect.

3. The pilgrimage and hidden wealth Once, both brothers with their families and many others went on a Jain yatra (pilgrimage).

• On the way they came near a village in a forest region.
• That road was known to be dangerous because of burglars and dacoits.
• To keep their ornaments and money safe, the brothers decided to dig a pit and bury their wealth till they returned.

While digging:

• They unexpectedly found a big pot full of jewels and coins already buried there.
• Now they had their own wealth plus this new wealth.
• They were puzzled: “What should we do with this money so that it is really used in the right way?”

4. Anupamā-devī’s wise answer Tejpal asked his wife Anupamā-devī, “What should we do with this immense wealth?”

She replied in a very spiritual way (meaning in simple words):

• “This wealth has come from a deep trench, but its proper place is on a high mountain.”
• “If we use it to build a Jain temple on a high place, it will spread the glory of Jainism for a very long time.”

Her idea was:

• Do not keep or enjoy this new wealth for personal luxury.
• Use it for Jinmandir nirmān (temple construction) and dharma-prabhāvanā (spreading Jain Dharma).

5. Decision to build a temple on Mount Abu Listening to Anupamā-devī, both brothers happily decided:

• “We will build a grand Jain temple on Mount Abu.”

Later, this became the famous Lūṇā Vasahi / Lunig Vasahi temple in the Dilwara (Delwada) Jain temples complex on Mount Abu, dedicated to Bhagwan Neminath.

• It is one of the most beautiful marble Jain temples in the world.

6. Special features connected with the story In that temple:

• There are beautiful carvings, including the Samavasaran of Bhagwan Neminath.
• Tejpal dedicated two special gokhlas / niches, one in memory of his own wife and one for his brother’s wife.

- These are popularly called “Derani–Jethani na Gokhlas” (niches of the younger brother’s wife and elder brother’s wife).

• Around the main temple there are many small shrines, each with an image of a Tirthankar.
• Elephants were used to carry heavy marble stones up the hill, so a place called Hasti Shala / Hastishala (elephant hall) is also made to remember their service.

7. Their other great works Vastupal and Tejpal did not stop at one temple:

• They built and renovated many Jain temples, especially at Shatrunjaya, Girnar and Abu.
• They spent huge amounts of wealth every year in charity, temples, upashrayas, libraries, wells, stepwells, ponds and other public works.
• Their help was not only for Jains; they also donated for the welfare of all people.

Because of their courage, honesty, and dharma-bhakti, Gujarat became peaceful and strong, and Jain dharma flourished greatly in that period.

Spiritual message of the story

• Wealth is temporary, but using it in the right way makes it truly meaningful.
• When unexpected wealth comes, instead of misusing it, we should think: “How can this serve dharma and jiv-dayā?”
• Wise guidance (like that of Anupamā-devī) can turn worldly gain into permanent spiritual merit (punya).
• Service to Jinmandir, sādhu-sādhvijis, and all living beings is the best use of riches.
