    Book on jain yoga

    8 months ago 192

Here are some good Jain books on yoga / dhyān / sādhanā (Jain perspective only):

    1. For beginners (practical, simple)

    1) “Jain Yog” – Āchārya Mahāpragya (Mahaprajna) - Very clear explanation of what is Jain Yoga (Ratnatrayī – samyak darshan, jñān, chāritra). - Shows relation of dhyān, prāṇāyām, kayotsarg etc. with Jain karma theory and moksha-mārg. - Available in Hindi (and partly in English).

    2) Books on “Prekṣā Dhyān” – Āchārya Mahāpragya - Practical method of Jain meditation based on āgamas and Jain acharyas. - Step‑by‑step practice: āsan, prāṇāyām, leśyā-dhyān, anuprekṣā, kayotsarg etc. - Useful if you want daily practice with Jain view of soul and karma.

    3) Small books on Samayik / Pratikraman / Kayotsarg - Any short guide by Jain monks/nuns on sāmāyik and kāyotsarg is also actually a “Jain yoga manual”, because Jain yoga = practice of equanimity and inner purity.

    ---

    2. For deeper study (traditional Jain yoga texts)

These are classic śāstras, a bit advanced but very important:

    1) “Yogadṛṣṭisamuccaya” – Āchārya Haribhadrasūri (Śvetāmbara) - One of the earliest systematic works on Jain Yoga. - Explains different “views” of yoga and presents the Jain path of liberation.

    2) “Yogashāstra” – Āchārya Hemachandra (Śvetāmbara) - Big text on Jain conduct for laypeople and monks, in the form of “yoga”. - Explains that true yoga is right faith, right knowledge, right conduct, plus vows, tapas, dhyān etc.

    3) “Jñānārṇava” – Āchārya Subhachandra (Digambar) - Ocean of wisdom on dhyān and spiritual practice. - Strong focus on inner meditation, detachment, and overcoming passions.

    4) “Dhyānashatak” – Jinabhadragaṇi Kṣamāśramaṇa - One of the earliest systematic Jain works on meditation. - Explains four types of dhyān (ārta, raudra, dharma, śukla) and path to śukla‑dhyān.

    ---

    3. How to choose?

    • If you want simple, practical meditation:
start with “Jain Yog” and Prekṣā Dhyān books of Āchārya Mahāpragya.
    • If you want shāstric / deep study of Jain Yoga:
go to Yogadṛṣṭisamuccaya, Yogashāstra, and Jñānārṇava (with a good Hindi/English commentary).

These books will keep you fully within the Jain darshan (no mixing with other religions) and give you correct understanding of Jain Yoga as the path of the soul towards keval‑jñān and moksha.
