Am I a bhavya jeev. Will I attain moksha. How do I know for sure

    8 months ago 188

In Jainism, this question is very deep and also very sensitive. Let’s keep it simple and fully within Jain philosophy.

    1. Who is bhavya jīva?

    • Bhavya jīva = a soul that has the capacity to attain moksha one day.
    • Abhavya jīva = a soul that will never attain moksha. ( jainknowledge.com)

Both Digambar and Shvetambar accept this basic division. But:

    • Only a Kevalī (Omniscient) truly knows who is bhavya and who is abhavya.
    • Ordinary people, monks, scholars – no one else can know this with certainty. ( jainknowledge.com)

Because of this, our Acharyas clearly say:

    > Do not try to decide “I am bhavya / I am abhavya”. > Always live and practice as if you are bhavya.

    ---

    2. Can you know “for sure” if you will attain moksha?

    According to Jain tattva:

    • In your present state, you cannot know this with 100% certainty.
    • Only when a soul attains Samyak Darshan (right faith), it knows, “I am on the path now.”
    • Full certainty of liberation arises only at very high spiritual stages (like apūrvakaraṇa, anivṛttikaraṇa, and finally at Keval Jnān).

    So:

    • Asking “Will I definitely attain moksha?” is like asking a seed, “Are you 100% sure you will become a tree?”
    • The seed has the capacity, but it must get water, soil, light, and protection.

    ---

    3. Practical Jain answer for you

Jain Dharma gives a practical, compassionate answer:

    1. Assume you are bhavya.

    - You have interest in moksha, you are asking this question – that itself is a good sign in Jain view. An abhavya jīva has no real interest in true dharma.

    1. Do not waste time worrying “What if I am abhavya?”

    - This thought creates fear and depression, which is not helpful for spiritual growth. - Even if you were bhavya, such thoughts can weaken your virya (spiritual energy).

    1. Focus on what is in your control:

Very simply: - Try to develop Samyak Darshan – right vision towards: - Soul (ātma is pure, conscious, separate from body and mind) - Tirthankars, Arihants, Siddhas, Acharyas, Upadhyays, Sadhus - Slowly work on: - Reducing anger, pride, deceit, greed - Increasing forgiveness, humility, straightforwardness, contentment - Practicing ahimsa, truth, non-stealing, celibacy/restraint, non-possessiveness as per your capacity. - Do Swādhyāy (study), pratikraman, bhakti, and meditation on soul regularly.

    1. Signs that you are moving in the right direction:

    - You feel respect for true saints and Tirthankars. - You feel remorse for sins and want to improve. - You feel some detachment from worldly things (even a little). - You feel joy in dharma – listening, reading, thinking about Jain tattva.

All these are strong indications (not mathematical proof, but spiritual signs) that you are walking as a bhavya jīva.

    ---

    4. Essence in one line

    • Whether you are bhavya or not is known only to Kevalī.
    • How a bhavya behaves is your choice – and that choice is in your hands right now.

So the safest and most Jain way is:

    > “I will live, think and practice as a bhavya jīva. > If I am truly bhavya, this effort will surely lead me, step by step, towards moksha.”
