What if chauvihar is not possible, can i do navkarshi by itself?
In Jainism, chauvihar refers to the practice of not consuming any food or water after sunset until sunrise the next day. Navkarshi is the practice of taking the first meal at least 48 minutes after sunrise.
Ideally, both practices are observed together as part of daily spiritual discipline. However, if for some reason chauvihar is not possible due to health, age, or other unavoidable circumstances, it is still meritorious to observe navkarshi. Jain scriptures and acharyas recognize individual capacities and situations. Thus, doing navkarshi by itself is better than not following any discipline at all. The main purpose is to gradually cultivate self-control and minimize himsa (violence).
If you are unable to do chauvihar, you may still observe navkarshi with the intention of progressing in your spiritual practice when circumstances allow. Always try to consult with a Jain monk (sadhu/sadhvi) or a knowledgeable Jain elder for guidance tailored to your personal situation.
