In Jainism, every living being with consciousness is called a jiva (soul).

A human is also a jiva — a conscious soul currently in a human body. The special thing about a human birth in Jain Dharma is:

• It is very rare and highly valuable.
• Only in human form can a soul fully understand dharma, practice self-restraint, and progress towards liberation (moksha).

So, when you say “I am a human,” in Jain terms it means: “I am a soul (jiva) currently in a human body, with the great opportunity to move towards moksha.”
