    tell me about achalgach

“Achalgach” usually refers to Achal Gacch (Anchal / Vidhipaksh Gacch) – a sub‑sect (gacch) within Śvetāmbara Murtipujak Jainism.

    Here is a simple overview:

    1. What is a “Gacch”?

    • In Śvetāmbara Murtipujak tradition, a gacch is a monastic order:
    - A line of sadhus–sadhvijis (monks & nuns) - With its own discipline, traditions and associated lay followers.
    • Doctrinally they all follow the same Jain principles; differences are mostly in practices, discipline, and some ritual details.

    2. What is Achal Gacch?

    • Achal Gacch is:
    - One of the 84 traditional gacchas. - One of the main surviving gacchas of Śvetāmbara Murtipujak Jains.
    • It is also called:
    - Vidhipaksh Gacch – because of its emphasis on following vidhi (proper scriptural procedure). - Anchal / Achal Gacch – popular/pronunciation variants (often spoken as “Achalgach”).

    3. Founder and purpose

    • It was founded by Āchārya Aryarakshitsuriji (Śvetāmbara Murtipujak ācārya).
    • The main intention was:
    - To remove laxity that had come into monastic life. - To re‑establish strict adherence to Jain āgams, rules and discipline.
    • So Achal Gacch is known as a reform‑oriented and discipline‑focused order within Śvetāmbara Murtipujak Jainism.

    4. Beliefs and practice

    • Same basic Jain tatva as other Śvetāmbara Murtipujak traditions:
    - Belief in the 24 Tīrthankars, karm theory, ahimsā, aparigraha, samyak darshan–jñān–chāritra, etc.
    • Differences are mainly in:
    - Monk discipline (rules about conduct, movement, code of living). - Certain ritual and calendar practices, while remaining within mainstream Śvetāmbara Murtipujak norms.

    5. Relation to local Sanghs called “Achalgach”

Many local Jain organizations use “Achalgach” in their name because they follow or are connected with this gacch. Example: “Achalgach Jain Sangh” in Navi Mumbai is one such sangh; it works as a local community and religious center for Jains connected to this tradition. You can read a short note about it here

In summary, Achalgach = Achal Gacch, a Śvetāmbara Murtipujak Jain monastic order founded to keep strong discipline and correct scriptural practice, with many lay sanghs today connected to it.
