Is the use of contraceptives allowed?

    4 months ago 179

In Jain dharma this is not discussed directly in the āgams, so we have to apply basic principles: ahimsā (non‑violence), brahmacharya (sexual restraint), and aparigraha (non‑possessiveness).

    1. For monks and nuns

For sadhus and sadhvīs the rule is absolute brahmacharya. So any sexual activity – and therefore any question of contraceptives – simply does not arise.

    2. For householders (shrāvak–shrāvikā)

Jain texts allow married life, but teach:

    • be faithful to one partner
    • keep sexuality under control
    • do not harm any living being for the sake of pleasure
    • avoid strong passions, fantasies, and addictions related to sex

From this, traditional guidance for modern contraceptives is generally understood like this:

    (A) Methods that kill or expel an already conceived embryo

    • Anything that works like abortion (destroying or expelling a fertilised embryo/foetus) is clear himsā.
    • In Jain view, once a jīva has entered the embryo, ending that life collects very heavy karma.
    • So abortion and abortion‑like methods are to be avoided as far as possible.

    (B) Methods that try to prevent conception from happening

Examples (in simple terms): – barrier methods (separating sperm and ovum) – timing/abstinence methods (avoiding intercourse on fertile days)

These aim to prevent a jīva from entering a new body, rather than killing one that has already entered. Because of that, many Jain teachers see these as lesser himsā than abortion, especially when:

    • the couple is married,
    • they are trying to live with restraint,
    • they want to take responsible care of the children they already have or can truly support,
    • and they avoid methods or products that involve animal killing.

Still, even these should not be used to support a life of sensual indulgence. The ideal remains: fewer, calmer relations; more focus on sādhanā.

    (C) Permanent operations (sterilisation)

    • Deliberately damaging healthy organs can be seen as violence to one’s own body and usually shows strong attachment and fear.
    • So traditionally this is viewed more seriously and is discouraged unless there is a serious medical reason.

    3. How to decide in practice

A sincere Jain householder will usually check:

    1. Is this method directly killing any life?

If yes (abortion‑type), avoid as far as possible.

    1. Does it contain animal‑derived ingredients or cause violence in its making?

If yes, it goes against ahimsā.

    1. What is my bhāv (inner intention)?

    - Is it for responsible family life, health, and ability to follow dharma? - Or is it only to freely indulge in sensual pleasure?

    1. Can I increase brahmacharya instead?

    - Fewer relations, more mutual self‑control, and open acceptance of children are always more in line with Jain ideals.

Because individual situations differ (health, age, existing children, strength of vows, etc.), it is best for a serious practitioner to speak personally with a respected Jain guru or ācārya and take guidance suitable to their capacity.

    In summary:

    • Killing an existing embryo (abortion‑type methods) is strongly against Jain ahimsā.
    • Non‑abortive, non‑violent methods used within marriage for responsible parenthood are usually treated as a lesser fault, but should still be approached with restraint and right intention, never as a license for sensual excess.
