    what is sammed shikhar

    8 months ago 213

Sammed Shikhar (also called Sammed Shikharji or Shikharji) is the holiest Jain pilgrimage place (Tirthraj – king of tirths).

    Simple points:

    1. Location

    - It is a big mountain (Parasnath hill) in Giridih district, Jharkhand (India). - The whole mountain with many tonks (small temples on different peaks) is called Sammed Shikhar.

    1. Why it is most important

    - According to Jain tradition, 20 out of 24 Tirthankars attained moksha (liberation) here. - Because so many Tirthankars became siddha here, it is called a Siddha Kshetra and regarded as the highest Jain tirth. - Both Shwetambar and Digambar Jains equally accept its greatness.

    1. Meaning of the name

    - “Sammed / Sammet” comes from “samyak samādhī” – deep, pure meditation. - “Shikhar” means peak or top of a mountain. - So “Sammed Shikhar” means the peak where the Arihants remained in supreme meditation and attained moksha.

    1. Yatra (pilgrimage)

    - Jains do a parikrama (round trip on foot) on the hill, visiting the tonks of the Tirthankars. - The full yatra is around 27–30 km of walking on the hill. - It is done with great shraddha, many people take vows, fasts and do prarthana for spiritual upliftment.

    1. For both traditions

    - Shwetambar usually say “Sammet Shikhar” and Digambar “Sammed Shikhar” – only a language/pronunciation difference, no doctrinal conflict. - Both accept it as Tirthraj and Siddha Kshetra.

In short: Sammed Shikhar is the most sacred Jain mountain, where many Tirthankars attained moksha, so every Jain dreams to do its yatra at least once in life.
