    nirvana on sammed shikhar

    8 months ago 176

On Sammed Shikhar (Shikharji / Samet Shikhar), “nirvana” means moksha – the final liberation of the soul from all karmas, after which the soul becomes a Siddha and never takes birth again.

    In Jain tradition:

    • 20 out of 24 current Tirthankaras attained nirvana on Sammed Shikhar.
    • Therefore it is called “Siddha Kshetra” and “moksha‑bhumi” – a land where many souls became Siddha.
    • Both Digambar and Shwetambar accept Sammed Shikhar as the place of nirvana of these 20 Tirthankaras (names may slightly differ in some lists, but the number and basic belief are the same).
    • When Jains do parikrama on the hill and visit each tonk (peak/temple), they are actually going to the exact spots traditionally accepted as the nirvana‑bhumi of each Tirthankar.

    Main spiritual idea:

    • The Tirthankaras performed their last meditation (shukla‑dhyān) here.
    • At the end of that meditation, their ghāti karmas (knowledge‑covering, faith‑covering, deluding, and obstructing karmas) were destroyed.
    • Then the remaining aghāti karmas also ended with the body’s life‑span, and the soul rose to Siddha‑shila (top of the universe).
    • This final state is called nirvana or moksha – infinite knowledge, faith, bliss, and energy, forever.

Because so many Tirthankaras attained nirvana there, going to Sammed Shikhar with shuddha bhāv (pure inner feeling), doing pratikraman, jaap, and silence, is believed to strongly support samyak darshan (right faith) and progress towards our own liberation.
