How is Masterbation viewed
In Jain dharma, masturbation is generally viewed as not acceptable spiritually.
Basic Jain view:
- For monks and nuns (sādhus–sādhvīs):
- For laypeople (shrāvaks–shrāvikās):
Why it is discouraged in Jainism
- It excites passions (kashāyas) like desire and attachment.
- These passions cause āsrava (inflow of karma) and bandha (bondage of the soul).
- It weakens brahmacharya and self‑control, making the mind more restless and outward‑turned.
If it is already a habit
Jain path is not about guilt, but about correction:
- Admit the fault honestly (ālochana).
- Do pratikraman the same day with real regret.
- Take a small vow (pachchakkhān/pratyākhyān) like “I will avoid this for _x_ days.”
- Protect the mind: avoid porn and triggers, sleep on time, keep busy in svādhyāy, samayik, and satsang.
- Simple, light, sāttvik food and less idle phone use help a lot.
