When Nirvana or Moksh is not possible right now, why should we take diksha or even follow religion as lay persons
Very important Jain point here: “Even if moksh is not possible right now, every right step still permanently uplifts the soul.” Nothing is wasted.
Let’s see this in a very simple, Jain way.
---
1. Is moksh really “not possible now”?
- For most of us, in this life: yes, practically it is extremely far.
- But Jain darshan says:
- So present life may be:
So “not now” does not mean “never”. It means: this life is a building stage.

2. Why follow religion as a lay person (shravak–shravika)?
Even as a grihasthi, three very big things happen:
(a) We stop falling lower
- Without dharma, we easily do:
- This creates heavy paap karma → lower gatis, more suffering.
- By basic vows, pratikraman, samayik, charity, we reduce new bad karma.
(b) We create strong punya and right habits
- Helping sadhus–sadhvis, doing puja, listening to pravachan, reading scriptures:
- In future births this leads to:
- These are exactly the conditions from which diksha and higher sadhana become possible in some later life.
(c) We purify inner self step‑by‑step
- Even as a layperson we can:
- Every little reduction of passions (kashaya) burns karma.

3. Then what is the point of dīkshā if moksh is not “today”?
Diksha is still the direct highway to moksh, even if:
- this very life ends at kshayopasham stage (not full kshay),
- or only some layers of karma are burnt.
What diksha definitely gives:
- Maximum control over new karma
- Mahavratas in full form. - No money, no property, no family attachments. → Very low inflow of new karma.
- Fast burning of old karma
- Strong tapas: fasts, vihar on foot, chaturmas discipline, etc. - Constant swadhyaya, dhyana. → Old karmas mature and fall off quickly.
- Inner state close to vitragta
- Less distraction, more samayik-like life all the time. → Soul moves very fast compared to lay life.
So, even if final moksh comes after a couple more births, the soul of a diksharthi is moving at maximum speed toward that goal.

4. But why do anything if final result is so far?
Think of three levels of benefit:
1) Immediate benefit – this very day
- Mind becomes lighter after pratikraman.
- Anger reduces a little after forgiveness.
- Peace in samayik, during mantra, in upvas.
- Relationship harm reduces when we speak truth and gently.
So, religion is not only “for next life”. It gives today’s shanti and clarity.
2) Medium term – this life
- Less stress, fewer enemies, cleaner habits.
- Respect and trust in society.
- Family atmosphere becomes more sattvik.
- Mind becomes fit for higher understanding of Jain tattvas.
3) Long term – future lives + moksh
- Strong Jain sanskar stays with the soul.
- Higher birth, better conditions, better company.
- Eventually, conditions line up for:
No single good effort is ever lost in Jain dharma.

5. If I am not ready for diksha, what is the practical path?
Very simple, step‑wise:
- Know the goal
- Keep the idea: “I am a soul, my final goal is moksh.” - Remember Siddha Bhagwan as ideal of vitragta.
- Live as an honest shravak/shravika
- Follow the 5 anuvrat according to your capacity: - ahimsa, satya, achourya, brahmacharya (as per grihasth rules), aparigraha. - Do daily pratikraman, as much as possible.
- Regular small sadhanas
- Samayik (even once a week to start), - Swadhyaya (reading or listening 10–20 minutes), - Occasional upvas / ayambil, - Seva of sadhus–sadhvis and temples.
- Gradual inner change
- Every year, reduce at least one bad habit and strengthen one good habit. - Slowly increase aparigraha (simplicity in lifestyle).
- If vairagya deepens
- Then, in some life (maybe this, maybe next), true inner call for diksha can arise. - That diksha will then have a very strong foundation.

6. Summary in one line
- Diksha = fastest and purest path to moksh.
- Lay dharma = preparation, protection, and steady progress toward that same goal.
