When neminath bhagwan went for marriage why did he return back?
Bhagwan Neminath (Nemkumar) returned from his marriage procession because of ahimsa (non‑violence) and deep vairagya (detachment) that arose in his heart.
In simple steps:
- Animals tied for the wedding feast
- As his baraat (marriage procession) was going to Rajul/Rajimati’s palace, he saw many animals and birds tied in cages. - They were crying loudly in fear, because they were going to be killed for the wedding feast.
- Intense compassion arose
- Nemkumar thought: “For my happiness, so many innocent jiv (souls) will be killed. How can this be right?” - He understood clearly that real dharma cannot be based on himsa (violence).
- Vairagya and decision to renounce
- At that very moment, powerful detachment arose. - He felt: “If one marriage causes killing of so many beings, worldly life is full of himsa and bondage. I should search for a path where all living beings get true peace and safety.” - He decided: “I will not marry; I will walk on the path of renunciation.”
- Turning back the procession
- He ordered: all animals and birds must be freed. - He asked the charioteer to turn back the marriage procession from the middle of the way. - Relatives (even Shri Krishna, in the traditional Jain accounts) tried to stop him, but he remained firm.
- Diksha and Tirthankar‑hood
- After returning, he gave away his possessions and later took diksha on Girnar (Raivata) mountain, - Practising deep sadhana, he attained Kevaljnan and became the 22nd Tirthankar Bhagwan Neminath. - Rajimati herself, later understanding his path, also accepted diksha.
So, he returned from the marriage procession because his heart could not accept the killing of animals for his wedding, and in that moment he chose the path of ahimsa, renunciation, and liberation instead of worldly marriage.
