    Details of navkar taap

    8 months ago 188

Navkar Tāp (often linked with Navkar / Navpad / Navkar Ayambil Oli) is a special Jain tapasya (austerity) done with deep bhakti towards the Navkar Mantra and Navpad (nine supreme entities).

Below are the details in simple form:

    ---

    1. What is Navkar Tāp?

    • A vrat (tapasya) done for a fixed number of days (commonly 3, 5, 7, or 9 days).
    • Main focus:
    - recitation of Navkar Mantra, - worship of Navpad (Arihant, Siddha, Acharya, Upadhyay, Sadhu, Samyak Darshan, Samyak Gyan, Samyak Charitra, Samyak Tapa), - control over food and senses (upvas, ekasan, chauvihar).
    • Purpose:
    - to reduce paap karma, - to strengthen samyak darshan–gyan–charitra, - to increase shraddhā in Panch Parmeshti and Navpad.

    ---

    2. Usual Fasting Pattern (general)

(Details can vary by local tradition and guru’s guidance)

    • 3 or 5 days Navkar Tāp
    - Day 1: Upvas (full fast, only boiled water till sunset or as per niyam) - Middle days: Ekasan (one saatvik meal before sunset, chauvihar after that) - Last day: Upvas again
    • 7 or 9 days Navkar Tāp ( jainknowledge.com)
    - Day 1: Upvas - Middle: Ekasan (possibly with some extra niyam like no mithai, no fried, etc.) - Middle key day (e.g., day 4 or 5): Upvas - Last day: Upvas

    Always:

    • No food after sunset (chauvihar).
    • Boiled water only in fixed time, as per your niyam.

    ---

    3. Daily Vidhi (simple outline) ( jainknowledge.com)

    Morning

    1. Sankalp

    - In front of Jin Pratima or Navpad / Siddhachakra, bow and repeat your vow: - “Today I observe Navkar Tap with upvas/ekasan, as per my niyam, with bhakti towards Navpad and for atma-shuddhi.”

    1. Navkar Mantra Japa

    - Recite Navkar Mantra many times (for example 20, 108, 121, or according to your capacity). - Focus on meaning while chanting: - I bow to Arihant, Siddha, Acharya, Upadhyay, all Sadhus – and to their gunas, not to body. ( jainknowledge.com)

    1. Dhyan / Bhāvana

    - Think about the qualities of Panch Parmeshti and Navpad: - passionless, detached, truthful, non-violent, simple, doing tapa etc.

    1. Path / Pravachan

    - Read Jain scriptures, stories of Tirthankars, Acharyas, or listen to pravachan.

    Daytime

    1. Food discipline

    - As per niyam (upvas or ekasan). - Eat only saatvik, simple food, no taste-tempting items if taken. - Be very careful of ahimsa in every activity.

    Evening

    1. Navkar Mantra, Khamasamana, Logassa (where followed) ( jainknowledge.com)

    - Many traditions add: - Logassa Sutra – 9 times - Khamasamana (prostrations) – 9 times - Swastik – 9 times (draw with rice/chandan in front of Navpad / Jin) - This is especially common in Shwetambar traditions during Navpad/Narvkar-related tapasya.

    1. Pratikraman / Kshamapana

    - At night, do alpa-pratikraman or at least: - recall any faults of mind, speech, body during the day, - say “Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṃ” from heart.

    ---

    4. Types / Variations you may hear

    • Navkar Tāp (short duration) – 3, 5, 7, 9 days, as explained above. ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Navpad Ayambil Oli / Navkar Oli – 9 days Ayambil on each of the Navpad; focus slightly more on Ayambil Tap. ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Navkar Akshar Tāpa – chanting whole Navkar Mantra many times for each of its 68 akshar (letters) as a special sādhanā. ( jainknowledge.com)

All have one common center: deep, repeated remembrance of Navkar / Navpad and practice of tapa to purify the soul.

    ---

    5. Digambar / Shwetambar Notes

    • Idea and aim are the same in both traditions:
    - honour Panch Parmeshti / Navpad, do tapa, reduce karma.
    • Differences are mainly in vidhi style:
    - Exact number of Navkar, Logassa, Khamasamana, and detail mantras of sankalp and pratikraman may differ. - Some Digambar groups may focus more on upvas, paushadh, svādhyāy, dhyan, less on external puja styles used in Shwetambar temples. - Shwetambar tradition commonly links Navkar Tap with Navpad Ayambil Oli and Siddhachakra Aradhana with detailed daily puja-vidhi. ( jainknowledge.com)

Best is always to follow your own guru / local tradition for exact rules.

    ---

    6. Spiritual Essence

    • Bowing to guna (qualities), not to form.
    • Controlling ruchi (taste), krodh, mān, māyā, lobh through tapa.
    • Filling mind with bhakti towards Navpad, which helps in:
    - destroying paap karmas, - increasing śubha bhāv, - moving towards samyaktva and moksha.
