    Is ekadashi important in jainism?

    8 months ago 188

In Jainism, Ekadashi is not a specially important religious fast-day the way it is in many Hindu/Vaishnav traditions.

    1. Scriptural / traditional view

    • Jain Agams and main vrat (vow) lists do not give Ekadashi a special status.
    • The important Jain fasts and days are things like:
    - Upvas, Ekasana, Beasana, Ayambil - Pakkhi / Pakshik upvas (every 14th lunar day) - Ashtanhika / Ashtanika - Paryushan – Samvatsari - Ayambil Oli, Masakshaman, Attham / Atthai, etc.

These are clearly Jain in purpose and method, aimed at tapas (austerity), ahimsa and samyaktva (right attitude).

    2. Then why do some Jains keep Ekadashi?

    • In many regions, Jains live among Hindus, so cultural habits mix.
    • Some Jain families:
    - fast on Ekadashi, - or avoid grains on Ekadashi, - but they do so as a personal or family custom, not as a core Jain command.
    • When they keep Ekadashi, they usually still follow Jain rules:
    - no himsa-food (meat, eggs, etc.), - often no root vegetables, - no eating after sunset, - focus on paath, pratikraman, samayik, etc.

    3. Ekadashi in the Jain calendar

    • Chaturmas (the four holy months) is often counted from one Ekadashi to another (e.g. Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi to Kartik Shukla Ekadashi).
    • This is mainly for calendar calculation, not because Ekadashi itself is a special Jain upvas day.

    4. Simple conclusion

    • Is Ekadashi “important in Jainism”?
    - As a mandatory Jain fast-day: No. - As an optional, locally followed fast, kept with Jain principles: it’s acceptable, but it is secondary compared to main Jain vrats like Paryushan, Pakkhi, Ayambil Oli, etc.
