What about a new year related jain story in English

    8 months ago 161

Here is a simple Jain story for the New Year in English:

    ---

    “The New Diary of Keshav”

It was the night of 31st December. Everyone in the city was excited for the New Year – firecrackers, loud music, parties.

But in one small house, a boy named Keshav sat quietly with his mother. On the table lay a blank new diary.

Keshav asked, “Ma, everyone says New Year means a new start. How can one day change our life?”

His mother smiled and said, “Beta, one day cannot change everything, but one decision can. For Jains, every new moment is a chance to change our bhav (inner feelings). Do you want me to tell you a story from today itself?”

    Keshav nodded.

    ---

    The Morning Mistake

That very morning, Keshav had shouted at his younger sister, Meera.

She had accidentally dropped his favorite book and bent the pages. He became very angry and said harsh words: “You always spoil everything! Just go away. I hate you!”

Meera’s eyes filled with tears. She quietly went to her room.

The whole day Keshav felt a little heavy inside, but he did not say sorry. His pride stopped him.

    ---

The Evening at the Jain Temple

In the evening, Keshav’s family went to the Jain temple, as they always did on the last day of the year.

The guruji (Jain monk) was giving a short pravachan (sermon):

    > “We all wait for 1st January to change. > But remember, for a Jain, every breath can be a new year. > Whenever we realize our mistake, > if we do pratikraman (accept and repent), > that moment becomes our real New Year.”

    He continued:

    > “Real celebration is not in noise and fireworks, > but in reducing anger, ego, greed, and deceit even a little. > If today you truly forgive one person, > if you truly say ‘Michhami Dukkadam’ from your heart, > then today is your New Year.”

Keshav felt as if guruji was speaking directly to him. He remembered Meera’s sad face.

    ---

    A Quiet New Year Resolution

At night, while others were preparing to watch fireworks, Keshav sat with his new diary.

On the first page, he wrote:

    > “My New Year Resolution (Jain Way)” > 1. I will try to control my anger, especially with my family. > 2. Before sleeping, I will do a small pratikraman for the whole day. > 3. I will try to speak softly and truthfully. > 4. I will remember Ahimsa (non‑violence) in thoughts, words, and actions. > 5. If I hurt someone, I will say sorry and try to change my bhav.

As he finished writing, his mother came and said, “Keshav, it is almost midnight. Do you want to watch the fireworks from the balcony?”

Keshav shook his head. “Ma, first I want to do something more important.”

    ---

    The Real Celebration

He slowly walked to Meera’s room.

She was lying in bed, awake, still upset. Keshav sat beside her and said softly,

“Meera, I am really sorry for shouting at you. I know you didn’t bend my book on purpose. I let my anger control me. Please forgive me. Michhami Dukkadam.”

Tears came to Meera’s eyes again, but this time they were different.

She hugged him and said, “I forgive you, Bhaiya. Michhami Dukkadam.”

At that moment, someone outside started counting down:

    “10… 9… 8… 7…”

Fireworks burst in the sky. People shouted, “Happy New Year!”

Inside the small room, there were no fireworks, no loud music. Just two children forgiving each other with pure hearts.

Keshav felt something beautiful inside – light and peaceful.

He thought, “Maybe this is real New Year – when my heart becomes a little cleaner and my anger becomes a little less.”

He silently recited the Navkar Mantra, thanking the Arihants and Siddhas for showing the path of self‑change.

    ---

Moral of the Story (Jain Perspective)

    • New Year is not only a date on the calendar,
it is a change in our inner attitude (bhav).
    • We truly celebrate when we:
    - Accept our mistakes (alochana), - Repent with a pure heart (pratikraman), - Take a small vow to improve (pratyakhyan).
    • Even one step towards less anger, less ego, more kindness and ahimsa
is a real Jain New Year.

If you like, I can also share a very short New Year Jain prayer or resolution you can say daily.
