How many mahavigayi & what are they?
In Jain Dharma, Mahāvigai (महाविगई / महाविकृति) are 4 in number.
They are:
- Madhu – Honey
- Mākhan – Butter (cream butter taken out from curd/buttermilk)
- Māns – Meat (includes fish, eggs, etc.)
- Madirā – Alcohol / liquor
These four are called Mahā‑vigai (“great perversions”) because:
- They give rise to countless tiny living beings (micro‑organisms) within them.
- Their production and use involve very high hiṁsā (violence).
- They strongly disturb the mind and increase passions, which harms spiritual progress.
Therefore, for both Śvetāmbara and Digambara, these 4 Mahāvigai are considered abhakṣya – totally prohibited for anyone who wants to follow Jain principles seriously.
