meaning of this mantra Om Hreem Arihantanam Hantanam

    8 months ago 167

Here’s a simple Jain‑dharmic meaning of the mantra:

    Om Hreem Arihantanam Hantanam

    Break‑up:

    1. Om

    – A sacred syllable used at the start of many mantras. – It reminds us of the eternal, pure, conscious reality (shuddh ātmā / param tattva).

    1. Hreem

    – A beej (seed) syllable used in some Jain traditions in mantras like Shanti‑dhara etc. – It is chanted to invoke inner purity, spiritual energy and concentration on the qualities of the Arihants. – It is not part of the original Navkār Mantra, but an added auspicious syllable in certain later Jain practices.

    1. Arihantanam

    – “Of the Arihants.” – Arihant = ari (inner enemies like anger, pride, deceit, greed) + hant (destroyer). – So it refers to those beings who have destroyed all inner passions and attained keval‑jnān (infinite knowledge) but are still embodied.

    1. Hantanam

    – From the root “han” – destroyer. – Here it reinforces the idea that Arihants are destroyers of karmas and passions.

    ---

    Simple overall meaning

With this mantra we are essentially saying:

    > “With the sacred sound Om and Hreem, I bow to the Arihants – the great destroyers of inner enemies (kashāyas and karmas).”

    • It is a short, devotional form inspired by the Navkār / Arihantanam line.
    • There is no major Digambar–Shvetāmbara difference in the basic meaning of Arihant and Arihantanam; both accept Arihants as those who have destroyed inner passions and attained keval‑jnān.
