Is it ok to make a sale for a profit according to Jainism?

    8 months ago 157

Yes, it is allowed to earn profit in business according to Jainism – but with very clear conditions.

In Jain Dharma, the question is not “profit or no profit”, but:

    • How is the profit earned?
    • What happens to your mind (greed/attachment) because of that profit?

    1. When profit is acceptable

    Profit is dharmic when:

    1. No (or minimum possible) violence (Ahimsa)

    - Your business does not directly deal in weapons, meat, leather from killed animals, alcohol, etc. - You avoid trades known to cause a lot of himsa to beings.

    1. Honest dealing (Satya & Asteya)

    - You do not lie, cheat, hide defects, or manipulate weights, bills, or accounts. - No tax evasion, no bribery, no “black money”, no stealing of ideas or breaking trust.

    1. Fair and not exploitative

    - You don’t squeeze customers just because they are helpless. - You pay fair wages; you don’t exploit workers or partners. - You don’t take unfair advantage in emergencies (e.g., hoarding and then selling at extreme prices in a crisis).

    1. Limited desire, not greed (Aparigraha / Icchā-parimāṇ)

    - You may earn well, but you consciously limit your wants and attachment. - You see wealth as a responsibility, not an object of pride or show. - You use part of your profit for dāna (charity) and lok-kalyān (welfare of others).

In simple words: Ethical profit, without greed and without harm, is allowed for a Jain śrāvaka (layperson).

    2. When profit becomes adharmic

    Profit becomes spiritually harmful when:

    • You earn by knowingly harming living beings.
    • You do business with lies, fraud, black money, corruption, or cheating.
    • You repeatedly think “Only more profit, at any cost”, and ignore dharma.
    • You become proud, attached, and restless because of money.
    • Your wealth leads to more krodh (anger), mān (ego), māyā (deceit), lobh (greed).

Jain scriptures clearly say a wise person should not act sinfully “for the sake of profit, fear, or greed” – meaning: profit is never an excuse to drop ethics.

    3. Practical guideline for a Jain in business

    Ask yourself:

    • If I reduce my profit a little to avoid himsa or dishonesty, am I ready to do that?
    • If this same act were written openly in front of a Jain monk/Deva/Guru, would I still feel it is right?
    • Is my profit clean (shuddha) – with a calm heart, no guilt, no cheating?

If the answer is yes, then earning profit itself is not against Jainism.

    ---

So: Yes, you may make a sale for a profit in Jainism, as long as the business, the method, and your inner attitude are in line with Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya, and Aparigraha.
