How to know if I am enlightened?

    8 months ago 149

In Jainism, “enlightened” in the full sense means Keval‑jnān (omniscience) and then moksha. By that standard:

    • You know you are fully enlightened only when:
    - All four ghātī karmas (knowledge‑obscuring, perception‑obscuring, deluding, obstructive) are totally destroyed. - Infinite knowledge, perception, bliss and energy manifest. - There is no anger, pride, deceit, greed even in the subtlest form. - Fear, attachment, aversion – all are completely gone, permanently. - For an Arihant, divine preaching (divya‑dhvani) arises and is understood by all beings.

For us ordinary people, the question is really: “Am I moving toward enlightenment?” Jain āgamas describe signs of spiritual progress, not “I am enlightened” feelings. Key practical markers:

    1. Faith becomes right (samyak darshan)

    - Clear trust in: - Soul (jīva) and non‑soul (ajīva) - Karma and its fruits - Tirthankars and their teaching - Path of ahiṃsā, truth, brahmacharya, aparigraha, etc. - Superstition and blind belief start dropping. - You respect all living beings more naturally.

    1. Passions become weaker and rarer

    - You still get angry / greedy, but: - Intensity is less. - Duration is shorter. - You regret it quickly and try to correct it. - You hurt others less in thought, speech and action.

    1. You care more about your own soul than outer show

    - More interest in: - Sāmāyik, pratikraman, svādhyāy. - Reducing unnecessary possessions and ego. - Less interest in: - Impressing others with “I am spiritual”. - Arguing to prove “my view is right”.

    1. You see your faults more clearly than others’

    - Criticizing self (with balance) rather than blaming the world. - Genuine effort to remove one bad habit at a time.

    1. You follow the Three Jewels more steadily

    - Right faith, right knowledge, right conduct – even if small, but consistent.

    Important Jain view

    • Feeling peaceful, having visions, special experiences etc. does not prove enlightenment.
    • Claiming “I am enlightened” while anger, ego, attachment are present is considered mithyātva (wrong belief).
    • True keval‑jnān is extremely rare and occurs only at very high spiritual stages (gunasthānaks).

    Simple self-check (honest, private)

    You can quietly ask yourself:

    1. Is my ahimsā improving month by month?
    2. Are my anger and ego slowly reducing?
    3. Am I more detached from praise–insult, gain–loss?
    4. Am I regular in some basic practice (sāmāyik, pratikraman, navkār mantra, svādhyāy)?

If these are growing, you are going towards enlightenment, even if you are very far from keval‑jnān.
