    Shwetambar Pratikraman in simple English:

Pratikraman means “coming back” – returning from our mistakes and wrong actions, and asking for forgiveness with true repentance.

For Shwetambar Jains, the daily pratikraman is mainly built around the 6 Avashyaks (essential practices):

    1. Samayik

    - Sit quietly for about 48 minutes. - Try to keep the mind calm and equal toward friend–enemy, like a sadhu for that time. - Recite Navkar Mantra, read or listen to Jain scriptures, do peaceful meditation.

    1. Chauvisattho / Chaturvinshatistava

    - Bow and praise the 24 Tirthankars. - Remember their qualities (right faith, right knowledge, right conduct, total victory over anger, pride, deceit, greed). - Think: “I also want to walk on their path.”

    1. Vandana

    - Bow to sadhus and sadhvis (monks and nuns) as our spiritual teachers. - If no sadhu is present, bow in the northeast direction, remembering the Arihants. - This reduces ego and increases respect for the path of renunciation.

    1. Pratikraman (main part)

    - Think about what you did: - whom you hurt by body, speech or mind, - lies, anger, greed, carelessness, violence to living beings, etc. - From the heart say: - “Whatever wrong I have done, knowingly or unknowingly, I ask for forgiveness.” - Take inner resolve not to repeat the same faults.

    1. Kayotsarga

    - Stand or sit very still, without moving the body. - Focus on the soul, separate from the body. - Repeat Navkar Mantra or other sutras with awareness, letting go of attachment to the body.

    1. Pratyakhyan

    - Make a small vow for the future, for example: - “Till tomorrow morning I will not eat after sunset,” - or “I will avoid anger,” - or “I will not eat root vegetables,” etc. - This stops new bad karma from coming in.

    ---

Types of Shwetambar Pratikraman (by time):

    • Raisi (morning) – for faults of the previous night.
    • Devasi (evening) – for faults of the whole day.
    • Pakshik – once in 15 days.
    • Chaumasi – once in 4 months.
    • Samvatsari – once in a year (very important, on Paryushan).

Even if one cannot do daily pratikraman, Samvatsari pratikraman and “Micchami Dukkadam” (seeking forgiveness from all) is considered essential.
