So is marriage allowed
In Jainism, yes, marriage is allowed – for householders (shrāvaks and shrāvikās).
Very simply:
- Two paths are accepted in Jain Dharma:
1.
Grihastha-marg – householder’s path
- Marriage, family, job, responsibilities
- Follow
anuvrat (small vows): ahimsa, satya, asteya, brahmacharya (fidelity), aparigraha
2.
Vairagya / Sadhu-marg – renounced path
- No marriage, complete celibacy, full vows (mahāvrat)
- For monks and nuns (sadhus–sadhvīs):
- Marriage is
not allowed at all.
- They must be completely celibate.
- Marriage is
permitted and normal, but:
- Should be simple, without show-off and violence (ahimsa-based functions)
- Partners should support each other in following Jain principles: non-violence, truth, vegetarianism, aparigraha, etc.
- The goal is not just worldly pleasure, but helping each other in spiritual progress.
So:
- If you choose the householder path, marriage is allowed and accepted.
- If you choose the monk/nun path, marriage is completely given up.
