Yes. Jainism very clearly believes in rebirth (punarjanma) or the continuous cycle of birth and death called saṁsāra.

In very simple points:

1. Soul (jiva) is eternal

- The soul never dies. - Only the body dies; the soul leaves that body and takes a new one.

1. Why rebirth happens

- Because of karma – very fine karmic particles that stick to the soul due to our thoughts, words and actions. - As long as karma is attached, the soul must keep taking new births.

1. Forms of rebirth

Depending on karma, a soul can be reborn as: - Human being - Animal, bird, insect, plant, etc. - Heavenly being (dev) - Hellish being (naraki)

1. Is this forever?

- No. The goal in Jainism is to stop rebirth. - By Right Faith, Right Knowledge and Right Conduct, we stop new karma and remove old karma. - When all karma is finished, the soul attains moksha and goes to Siddha-shila – never reborn again.

1. Digambar & Shvetambar views

- Both traditions fully accept rebirth, karma and moksha. - Differences between them are in some details of practice and scripture, not in the basic belief in rebirth.
