Time after death when function can be organised

    8 months ago 176

In Jain Dharma there is no fixed “religious rule” that says a function must be held only after a certain number of days after death.

    Two points are important:

    1. From the soul’s point of view

    - The jīva (soul) leaves the body immediately at death and takes a new birth according to its own karma. - Whatever “function” we do later does not change its gati (next birth) or give it moksha. - Any pāth, prārthanā, dān etc. mainly purify our own bhāv (inner state).

    1. From family / social custom

    - Many Jain families keep a short mourning period (often 3 days, sometimes up to 8–10 or 13 days) before organizing any big function or celebration. - This is vyavahār / social maryādā, not a scriptural command. - Simple things like: - Navkār mantra jap - Shānti pāth, pratikraman - Small dān, jīva-dayā in memory of the departed can be done from the first day itself, calmly and without show.

So, as per shuddh Jain siddhānt:

    • There is no compulsory waiting time fixed by scripture.
    • For practical and emotional reasons, families usually avoid big functions for a few days, then organize any necessary rites or memorial gatherings when they are mentally settled.
