what if i eat egg by mistake?
In Jain Dharma, eating egg (even by mistake) is considered himsā, but the way to handle it is with awareness, repentance, and resolve – not with guilt and hopelessness.
Very simple way to see it:
- Accept the mistake with awareness
Silently admit: “Yes, I ate egg. It is against ahimsā and Jain maryādā.” Running away in confusion or justifying it (“it’s okay, it was only once”) increases carelessness.
- Do pratikraman / prāyaścitta (repentance)
If you know the Navkār Mantra, recite it with bhāva: - Ask for forgiveness from all living beings you have hurt. - Mentally bow to Arihant, Siddha, Achārya, Upādhyāya, Sādhu and take strength from them. Many Jains also do a small ālochana: “I did this out of ignorance / weakness, I accept it as a fault.”
- Take a small practical vow (anushthan)
Decide something like: - “From now on I will be more careful in checking ingredients.” - “I will not knowingly eat anything that may contain egg.” You can even write it down or say it in front of a Jina image at home.
- Be more alert next time
- Read labels in detail (cakes, mayonnaise, breads, biscuits, sauces, etc.). - Outside food: clearly tell them “no egg, no egg products” and prefer places you trust. - When in doubt, avoid that item.
- Don’t fall into two extremes
- Extreme guilt: “I am a bad Jain, now nothing matters.” This leads to more fall. - No seriousness: “It was only egg, not a big deal.” This kills inner sensitivity. Jain way is the middle: accept, repent, improve.
- View from Jain traditions
- Digambar and Shvetāmbara – both clearly teach: eggs (fertilized or unfertilized) are not to be eaten because they are life or potential life and against ahimsā. ( jainknowledge.com)
