    Ashtottari abhishek kriya

    8 months ago 425

“Ashtottari Abhishek” = Abhishek done with the count of 108 (ashtottar‑shat = 100 + 8). In Jain tradition it usually means: offering water (or other dravyas) 108 times on the idol of a Tirthankar with specific mantras or names.

Below is a very simple, commonly followed kriyā. Exact details can vary by sangh and guru, so always follow your local maryādā first.

    ---

    1. Purva‑taiyari (Preparation)

    • Snān, clean clothes, preferably simple white.
    • Do āchaman (sipping small drops of clean water) and prāṇāyām or short Navkār Mantra jāp to calm the mind.
    • Take a firm bhāv:
“I am doing this abhishek only for shuddha ātma‑bhāv and kṣay of karma, not for material wishes.”

    ---

    2. Mangalācharaṇ (Invocation)

Standing or sitting near the vedi:

    • Chant Navkār Mantra at least 3, 9 or 12 times.
    • Take the kalash in hand and do a short prayer such as:
    - “Hey Arihant Bhagwan, may this abhishek become cause for samvar and nirjarā of my karmas.”

(Some traditions add a short śānti‑stotra or guru‑vandana here.)

    ---

    3. Main Ashtottari Abhishek

    (A) Dravya

    Most basic form uses:

    • Jal (pure water) – only
    or
    • Jal + other puja dravyas as per local system (kesar‑jal, chandan‑jal, etc.)

    (B) Count of 108

There are two very common ways:

    1. 108 names / mantras

    - Pour a small stream of water on the idol once with each name: - e.g. for Mahavir Bhagwan: 108 names / guṇānuvād, or 108 “Om Hreem Mahāvīrāya Namaḥ” with slight variations, depending on your book. - Keep a mālā or mental count so that the total offerings = 108.

    1. Navkār or Mool‑Mantra 108 times

    - Keep repeating Navkār Mantra (or “Om Hreem Shri Nemināthāya Namaḥ” etc.) - With every repetition, do a light tila of water over the mūrti, till count reaches 108.

    During the whole abhishek:

    • Bhāv should be:
    - “I am washing my own karmic impurities, not the idol.”
    • Keep dravya flow gentle, with full shraddhā, no hurry, no talking.

    ---

    4. Antar‑bhāv (Inner Reflections during Abhishek)

While doing the 108 offerings, many shrāvaks internally think:

    • “May all jīvas attain shānti and samyag‑darshan.”
    • “May my krodh, mān, māyā, lobh reduce.”
    • Reflect on some guṇ:
    - Arihant’s keval‑jñān, - Vitarāg bhāv, - Total ahimsā, etc.

Even if you don’t know full formal 108‑nāma, keep strong dhyān on these guṇ.

    ---

    5. Samāpti (Completion)

    After the 108 are finished:

    • Lightly dry the idol as per local practice (cloth used only for this purpose, with full respect).
    • Do Arghya / Aarti / Mangal‑dīp if your tradition does it.
    • Fold hands and recite a short prayer like:
    - “Jo kuchh doṣ huā ho vachan, kāya, man se, uski kṣamā chahtā/chahtī hūn. Is puṇya se shuddha samyaktva aur mokṣa‑mārg ki pragati ho.”

    Then do pradakṣiṇā and Namaskār.

    ---

    6. Digambar – Śvetāmbara Notes

    • Śvetāmbara:
    - Ashtottari abhishek is often part of temple morning puja, sometimes with a printed “108‑nāma” pustika (e.g., 108 names of Mahavir or other Tirthankars). - Often combined with Snātra‑Pūjā or daily abhishek.
    • Digambar:
    - Many Digambar temples do jal‑abhishek with Navkār or other mantras 108 times. - Some lineages have their own 108‑nāma stotra or fixed mantra for each pour. - Strict rules on dravya shuddhi, touching of mūrti, and who may perform abhishek – follow your local āchārya / granth maryādā.

Essence in both: Not the “style” of pouring, but shuddha bhakti + vitarāg dhyān and reduction of rāg‑dveṣ is the real Ashtottari Abhishek.
