What is jain's ultimate life goal

    8 months ago 161

In Jainism, the ultimate goal of life is Moksha (also called Moksh, Nirvana or becoming a Siddha).

    Very simply:

    • Every living being (soul / jiva) is naturally pure, with:
    - infinite knowledge - infinite perception - infinite bliss - infinite energy
    • Because of karma (subtle karmic matter attached to the soul), we take birth again and again, feel pain and pleasure, and remain in the cycle of birth and death (samsar).
    • Ultimate goal =
Completely remove all karma, become totally pure, and never take birth again. This state is called Moksha.

    In Moksha, the soul:

    • is free from all bodies and all suffering
    • has infinite knowledge and bliss forever
    • stays at the top of the universe (Siddha‑shila) as a Siddha.

How Jainism describes the path to this goal

The path is called Moksha‑marg and is based on the Three Jewels (Ratnatraya):

    1. Samyak Darshan – Right Faith
    2. Samyak Jnana – Right Knowledge
    3. Samyak Charitra – Right Conduct

    By living with:

    • Ahimsa (non‑violence)
    • Satya (truth)
    • Achaurya / Asteya (non‑stealing)
    • Brahmacharya (celibacy / sexual purity)
    • Aparigraha (non‑attachment, non‑possessiveness),

we stop new karma from coming (called Samvar) and shed old karma (called Nirjara). Slowly the soul becomes purer and moves towards Moksha.

    Digambar and Shwetambar view

    • Both traditions fully agree that:
    - Moksha is the highest and final goal of life. - It is the complete freedom from karma and rebirth. - It is attained through Right Faith, Right Knowledge and Right Conduct.
    • They differ in some details of practice (monk rules, clothing, scriptures), but not in the definition of the ultimate goal.
