If Jainism follows ahimsa, why consuming dairy allowed? They hurt animal to produce milk for human
You are thinking in the right direction. From a strict ahimsa point of view, today’s dairy industry really is a big problem.
In Jain dharma we have to understand two levels:
---
1. Traditional / scriptural view
- Jain shastras mainly give two levels of vows:
- Classically, for householders:
- For monks and very strict practitioners, the standard is higher. Many acharyas and sadhus avoid dairy altogether, or accept it only under very strict conditions.
You can read more here: “Why can we have milk” “Is milk allowed to be consumed as per shastra?”
---
2. Today’s reality: your concern is valid
In modern commercial dairy, usually:
- Cows are repeatedly made pregnant.
- Calves are separated from mothers.
- Male calves are often killed or sold.
- Cows live in pain and are slaughtered after they stop giving enough milk.
This is clear himsa. So many modern Jain acharyas, monks, nuns and serious laypeople say:
- If milk involves such cruelty,
Because of this:
- Many Jain sadhus/sadhvis (both Digambar and Shwetambar) now do not take milk or dairy.
- Many lay Jains are moving towards veganism (no milk, no ghee, no cheese, etc.) as a higher practice of ahimsa.
See: “Can we drink milk in Jainism” “Should Jains stop drinking cow’s milk…”
---
3. So why is dairy “allowed” at all?
Important point: Jain dharma does not command you to drink milk. It only traditionally permitted it for householders under conditions of minimum or no cruelty.
- Earlier village-style care: relatively less himsa → milk was tolerated.
- Modern factory-style farms: heavy himsa → morally much harder to justify.
So we can say:
- Shastra-level minimum for householders:
- Higher Jain ideal of ahimsa today:
---
4. Simple practical guidance
If you want to follow ahimsa more deeply:
- Best / highest step
- Go dairy‑free / vegan as much as you can. - Use plant milks (soy, almond, oat, etc.), vegan ghee alternatives, etc.
- If family still uses dairy
- Reduce quantity. - Avoid products from clearly cruel systems. - Never support killing or trade of animals.
- Remember:
- Jainism always encourages moving from allowed → less → least himsa. - So, cutting down or leaving dairy is a beautiful step towards true ahimsa, fully in line with Jain dharma.
You have understood the contradiction very clearly; many modern Jains are asking exactly this and changing their lifestyle because of it.
