Can someone can identify as Jain, who is not born from the jain family background? If he understands and respect ahimsa and Jain’s philosophy?

Yes, a person who is not born in a Jain family can definitely become Jain.

In Jain dharma, being “Jain” is not about birth, surname, caste, or community. It is mainly about:

    1. Right Faith (Samyak Darshan) – accepting the teachings of the Tirthankaras as true.
    2. Right Knowledge (Samyak Gyan) – understanding the soul, karma, and the path.
    3. Right Conduct (Samyak Charitra) – trying to live with ahimsa, satya, asteya, brahmacharya, and aparigraha in daily life.

    So if someone:

    • sincerely understands and respects ahimsa (non‑violence)
    • accepts Jain principles and tries to live by them
    • follows at least the anuvratas (small vows for householders) as much as possible

then, from the Jain point of view, that person can be considered a Jain shravak/shravika (lay follower), even if they were not born in a Jain family.

    A few clarifications:

    • No rule of “birth only”
Jain scriptures and tradition do not say that only those born in Jain families can follow Jain dharma. Many great Jain followers in history were not born Jain; they accepted Jain dharma later.
    • No compulsory conversion ritual
There is no “baptism‑style” or forced conversion system. The real change is inner – in belief and conduct. If someone wants, they may: - start chanting Navkar Mantra - follow ahimsa in food (strict vegetarian, ideally more ahimsak) - learn from Jain teachers and visit derasar/upashray - gradually take and observe lay vows Then practically and spiritually they are living as a Jain.
    • Digambar / Shwetambar
Both traditions accept sincere seekers from any background. The differences are in external practices and some texts, not in the idea that “only born Jains are real Jains.”

So, if you genuinely accept Jain darshan and walk on the path of ahimsa and the other vows, you can identify as Jain, even without a Jain family background.
