In Jain Dharma, “Aath Nimit” (8 types of nimit) are mainly used for shakun–apshakun (good–bad omens), as described in Jain Purāṇas like Mahāpurāṇ and Harivaṁśapurāṇ.

The 8 types are:

1. Antarikṣa Nimit (अंतरिक्ष निमित्त)

– Signs seen in the sky / space – e.g. thunder, meteors, strange lights, clouds etc.

1. Bhauma Nimit (भौम निमित्त)

– Signs seen on the earth / ground – e.g. earthquakes, cracks, marks appearing on land etc.

1. Aṅga Nimit (अंग निमित्त)

– Signs on one’s own body parts – e.g. sudden twitching, jerking, throbbing in eye, arm, leg etc.

1. Svara Nimit (स्वर निमित्त)

– Signs from voice / sounds – e.g. how someone calls, tone of voice, sudden unusual sounds.

1. Vyañjana Nimit (व्यंजन निमित्त)

– Signs from marks, moles, lines, features – e.g. moles, special marks on body, face lines, etc.

1. Lakṣaṇa Nimit (लक्षण निमित्त)

– Signs from special symbols or forms – e.g. seeing lotus, wheel, conch etc. as special auspicious marks.

1. Chhinna Nimit (छिन्न निमित्त)

– Signs from cut, broken, struck things – e.g. cut clothes, weapon strike, broken objects giving some indication.

1. Svapna Nimit (स्वप्न निमित्त)

– Dreams – Auspicious or inauspicious dreams indicating future events.

These eight are called “Aṣṭa Nimit” (अष्ट निमित्त). They are mentioned especially in Digambar Purāṇ literature, but the idea of such omens is generally known in Jain tradition. There is no major Digambar–Śvetāmbara difference in the basic list itself; mainly the detailed descriptions and examples may vary by text.
