What is gotra of shah
“Shah” is not a gotra, it is a surname / family name.
In Jain society (especially Gujarati/Jain Vanik families):
- “Shah” usually comes from the word “Shreshti / Sheth / Shah”, meaning a wealthy merchant or leader.
- Many different Jain communities use “Shah” – for example:
Because of this, people with the surname Shah can belong to many different gotras and Jain communities. So there is no single fixed gotra for “Shah”.
If you want to know your specific gotra, you normally need to ask within your own family:
- Your elders (parents, grandparents)
- Or look at old family genealogies (kul, vanshavali)
From Jain spiritual point of view, “gotra” is also one of the 8 types of karma (gotra karma), which decides whether one is born in a high or low family, but that is different from social surname like “Shah”.
