What happens to the soul after death
In Jainism, the soul (jiva) never dies; only the body dies. After death, this is what happens, in simple steps:
- Separation from the body
At the moment of death, the soul leaves the body instantly. There is no “waiting period” in between.
- Immediate next birth
In the very next moment, the soul takes a new birth according to its karma. There is no gap or wandering in between lives.
- Four possible gati (states of rebirth)
Depending on past thoughts, actions and karmas, the soul is born in one of four gatis: - Manushya gati – human birth - Tiryanch gati – animals, birds, insects, plants, micro‑organisms - Deva gati – heavenly beings (devas) - Narak gati – hell beings, with very intense suffering ( jainknowledge.com)
These are not permanent; after that life ends, again another birth comes according to karma.
- No family relation after death
Relations like “mother, father, son, husband, wife” end with that life. After rebirth, each soul goes its own way as per its own karma; there is no fixed “family together in next life”. ( jainknowledge.com)
- Can a soul get stuck somewhere?
In Jain view, the soul does not get permanently stuck as a ghost or ancestor. What people call “ghosts” etc., if they exist, are also just souls in some painful state under heavy karma, still within the same law of birth–death. ( jainknowledge.com)
- Ultimate possibility – Moksha
If a soul completely destroys all karma through Right Faith, Right Knowledge and Right Conduct (samyak darshan, jnan, charitra), then at the last death it becomes free forever. - The soul rises to the top of the universe, Siddhashila, - Never takes birth again, - Lives in its pure nature: infinite knowledge, perception, bliss and energy. - Digambar & Shvetambar – any difference here?
- Both agree fully on: soul’s eternity, karma, four gatis, immediate rebirth, and moksha at Siddhashila after the final death. - Differences are in some details of cosmology and practice, not in this basic principle of what happens after death.
In short: After death, the soul instantly takes a new birth according to its karma, in one of four gatis, and this continues until all karmas are destroyed and the soul attains moksha in Siddhashila.
