What is the importance of astrology in Jainism
In Jainism, astrology (jyotish) is not a core part of Dharma or the path to moksha.
Very simply:
- Karma is central, not planets
- Jain philosophy clearly teaches that our present and future are mainly shaped by our own karma and present efforts (purushartha), not by the positions of stars and planets. - What we think, speak, and do (with intention) attracts karma; this is what brings happiness or suffering, not a horoscope.
- Astrology is not a required Jain practice
- Canonical Jain texts (Agamas, Tattvartha Sutra etc.) focus on: - Right faith (samyak darshan) - Right knowledge (samyak jnana) - Right conduct (samyak charitra) - They do not say that one must follow astrology for spiritual progress or for correct Jain living.
- Cultural vs. doctrinal
- Many Jains consult astrologers for marriage, house, business, “good time” for ceremonies, etc. - This is cultural and social, not a must from Jain Shastra. - So a Jain may or may not use astrology; one’s Jain-ness does not depend on it.
- Digambar and Shwetambar view
- Both traditions agree: - Liberation depends on karmic purification and self-effort, not on stars. - Astrology, where used, is at most a secondary, optional aid for worldly decisions, not a spiritual necessity. - Any “Jain astrology books” are later works and not on the same level as scriptures like Tattvartha Sutra or canonical Agamas.
- How a Jain should see astrology
- Do not become dependent on it or fearful of it. - Never use astrology as an excuse for bad behaviour: - “My stars are bad, so I got angry / cheated / hurt someone” – this goes against Jain karma theory. - Main focus should be: - Ahimsa (non‑violence) - Satya (truth) - Achaurya (non‑stealing) - Brahmacharya (chastity / restraint) - Aparigraha (non‑attachment) - These directly purify karma; astrology does not.
Summary In Jainism, the real “astrology” is your own karma and conduct. Planets may have some physical existence, but they do not rule your soul’s destiny. For a Jain, the importance of astrology is at most social and optional; the true importance lies in right conduct and inner purification.
