    Significance of logas

    8 months ago 161

In Jainism, “Logas” (Prakrit for Lokas) means the different regions of the universe (loka) where souls take birth according to their karma.

    Very simple:

    1. Three main Lokas (Trilok)

    - Urdhva Loka – Upper world - Abode of devas (heavenly beings). - At the very top of this is Siddha Shila, where liberated souls (Siddhas) stay forever in pure bliss. - Madhya Loka – Middle world - Our world – humans, animals, plants etc. - Only here can a soul practice true religion and attain moksha. - Adho Loka – Lower world - Abode of naraki (hellish beings) who suffer due to heavy papa (bad karma).

    1. Why are these Lokas important (significance)?

    - They show that the universe is eternal, fixed in structure, and has no creator God. - They explain why we are born in different conditions – heavenly, human, animal, hellish – all based on karma, not on God’s will. - They help us understand the goal of life: - Avoid karmas that lead to Adho Loka (hell). - Don’t get attached even to pleasures of Urdhva Loka (heavens), because they are temporary. - Use this rare human birth in Madhya Loka for samvar (stopping new karmas) and nirjara (shedding old karmas) to reach Siddha Shila. - They remind us that every action has a result somewhere in these Lokas. Nothing is lost; every karma gives its fruit in some birth, in some loka.

    1. Digambar / Shvetambar view

    - Both traditions accept the same basic three Lokas and Siddha Shila on top. - Differences are mainly in detailed measurements, diagrams, and naming of sub-levels, not in the core idea.
