What is nikachit karma. How does one bind it? In detail

    8 months ago 240

Nikachit karma is a very specific, technical idea in Jain karmavād. I’ll explain it step‑by‑step, in simple language.

    ---

    1. What is nikachit karma?

In Jainism, nikachit (निकाचित / निकाॅचित) karma is the tightest, absolutely unchangeable bondage of karma.

    • Once a karma becomes nikachit,
its result must surely be experienced – pleasure or pain – and it cannot be: - reduced (apkarshan), - increased (utkarshan), - transformed into another sub-type (sankraman), - or brought earlier (udirana).

You can think of it as:

    > “That small portion of your karmic stock which has become 100% fixed. > It must give its exact result at its exact time, and no sādhanā can now change that particular karma itself.”

Classical texts like Shatkhandāgama and Karmagranthas describe nikachit karma in exactly this sense – as pradeśa (karmic particles) on which no karmic-operation (kāraṇ) is now possible.

    ---

    2. Place of nikachit karma among other bondages

When karmas attach to the soul, Jain ācāryas describe four levels of “tightness” of bondage:

    1. Spṛiṣṭa / śithil (loose) – can be removed easily (e.g. sincere regret).
    2. Baddha / gāḍha (tight) – needs apology, repentance, some effort.
    3. Nidhatti (very tight) – can only be changed with strong tapas and very intense efforts.
    4. Nikachit (tightest / fixed) –

    - Cannot be changed by any karmic operation. - Can be removed only by fully bearing its result. ( jainfoundation.in)

So every karma bound to the soul is not nikachit. Only a small, specially “hardened” part becomes nikachit. The rest is still modifiable.

    ---

    3. Technical meaning (in traditional language)

Karmagranthas use the term “nikachana kāraṇ”:

    • It is a special internal condition (bhāva) by which certain karmic particles become so fixed that:
    - they are not affected by utkarshan/apkarshan/sankraman/udirana, - hence they are called nikachit karma. ( jainworld.jainworld.com)

In simple terms: Normally, through strong spiritual effort, many karmas can have their duration, intensity, or even sub‑type changed. But if they have gone through nikachana, they become non‑negotiable; only their experience will finish them.

Both Digambar and Śvetāmbara traditions accept this basic meaning. Differences, if any, are in technical classifications, not in the core idea that nikachit karma is inevitable in its fruition.

    ---

    4. How does one bind nikachit karma?

    4.1. General law of karma-bandha

Any karma (including nikachit) binds due to:

    1. Mithyātva – wrong belief / ignorance of true nature of soul.
    2. Kaṣāya – passions (anger, ego, deceit, greed).
    3. Yoga – activities of mind, speech, body.

    Where:

    • Yoga brings karmic matter in contact with the soul (āsrava).
    • Mithyātva + kaṣāya “glue” those particles, creating bandha (bondage).

The stronger and longer the passions, the deeper and tighter the bondage.

    ---

4.2. What extra makes it nikachit?

    A karma becomes nikachit when:

    1. Passions are extremely intense, and
    2. They are repeated / nourished strongly in the same direction, leading to
    3. A special hardening process called nikachana kāraṇ.

This can happen in both good and bad directions:

    • Very intense auspicious bhāva (deep attachment to worldly punya, fame, pride in charity, etc.)
    → can create nikachit punya.
    • Very intense inauspicious bhāva (violent anger, cruel intentions, hatred, revenge)
    → can create nikachit pāp. ( jainworld.jainworld.com)

    So the steps, very simply:

    1. You act / think / speak with wrong understanding.
    2. You have strong passions (krodh, mān, māyā, lobh) around that.
    3. Because of that, karma binds very tightly (gāḍha, then nidhatti).
    4. With extreme, repeated intensity, that particular karma undergoes nikachana.
    5. It now becomes nikachit – fixed in:

    - nature (prakṛti), - quantity (pradeśa), - duration (sthiti), - intensity (anubhāga).

Nothing—not even very high austerity—can change that particular karma now. You can only exhaust it by experiencing its result.

    ---

    5. What does nikachit karma actually do?

    When its time comes (udaya):

    • Nikachit pāp brings a certain, unavoidable pain
(e.g. particular attack, disease, loss, insult, accident, etc.).
    • Nikachit punya brings certain, unavoidable comfort or success
(e.g. being born in a particular high status, a fixed minimum lifespan, etc.).

    Key points:

    • Only a few karmas are nikachit.
The majority of your karmic stock is changeable.
    • Nikachit karma is not a license for laziness:
“Everything is fixed, so why do sādhanā?” – this idea is clearly rejected by Jain Āgamas and ācāryas. ( jainqq.org)

    ---

    6. Can nikachit karma ever be changed or avoided?

    In classical Jain doctrine:

    • Once karma is truly nikachit,
that specific bondage cannot be altered in: - how long it will last (sthiti), - how strong its result will be (anubhāga), - what kind of result it is (prakṛti), - how much of it there is (pradeśa).

    However, two important clarifications:

    1. Our mistake is to call every suffering “nikachit”.

    - Most suffering comes from non‑nikachit karmas, which can be softened or changed.

    1. Even for nikachit karma:

    - You cannot avoid that event / result, - But you can change: - how you respond to it (with equanimity or new passions), - whether you bind fresh heavy karma on top of it, - surrounding conditions (extra punya / pap around it).

Example idea (not from other religions, but a simple Jain-style explanation):

    > A fixed painful operation must happen (nikachit pāp), > but: > - whether you scream, hate, and curse others, > - or stay calm, forgive, and remember the soul, > will decide what new karmas you bind at that time.

So even where fate is fixed, your present puruṣārtha (effort) still matters greatly.

    ---

    7. How to avoid binding new nikachit karma?

While bound nikachit karma must be experienced, you can greatly reduce or stop creating new nikachit karmas by:

    1. Samyak Darshan (right faith)

    - Developing true vision of soul, Jina, Dharma, Guru. - Reduces strong mithyātva‑based passions.

    1. Reductions in kaṣāya intensity

    - Practice kṣamā (forgiveness) instead of deep anger. - Reduce mān (ego), avoid “I did this, I am great.” - Avoid deceit and greed in big, repeated ways.

    1. Careful use of mind, speech, body (samyak yoga)

    - Avoid actions done with extreme emotional charge in wrong direction: - cruel violence, - intense revenge, - proud, showy punya done only for fame, etc.

    1. Daily pratikraman and alochanā

    - Identifying your anger/ego/greed daily, - Softens bondages and prevents them moving towards nidhatti/nikachit.

    1. Tapas and dhyān

    - Austerities and meditation burn and soften many karmas before they reach the nikachit state. - Most karmas can be greatly modified or destroyed before they harden.

All this is simply application of the three jewels: samyak darshan – samyak jnān – samyak chāritra.

You can read a simple explanation of nikachit among the four levels of bondage and general karma theory here:

There is also a Q&A about “how is nikachit karma bound” in everyday language here:

    ---

    8. Summary in very simple words

    • Nikachit karma = that small part of your karma which has become absolutely fixed and unavoidable due to very intense, repeated passions.
    • It binds when:
    - there is wrong belief, - very strong anger/ego/deceit/greed, - and repeated misuse of mind, speech, and body.
    • Once nikachit, it cannot be changed;
it will surely give its exact pleasure/pain at its exact time, and will end only after being fully experienced.
    • But:
    - Most karmas are not nikachit and can be changed by sādhanā. - Even during nikachit udaya, your present attitude can be pure, preventing new heavy bondage and leading you closer to liberation.

In Jain dharma, therefore, nikachit karma explains why some events are unavoidably fixed, but it never denies the power of self‑effort, present awareness, and spiritual practice for the vast majority of your karmic stock.
