What is Bharat Kshetra and explain other kshetras ?
In Jain cosmology, "Kshetra" means a "region" or "land." Jain scriptures describe the universe as divided into various regions, each with its own characteristics and spiritual significance.
Bharat Kshetra (Bharat Kṣetra)
Bharat Kshetra is one of the most important regions in Jain cosmology. It is part of Jambudvipa (the central continent in the middle world, Madhya Loka) and is considered the land where human beings live, attain liberation (moksha), and where Tirthankaras are born and preach. Bharat Kshetra is named after the first Chakravarti king, Bharata, who was the son of the first Tirthankara, Rishabhanatha. In Jain tradition, our current world is situated in Bharat Kshetra, and this is where the 24 Tirthankaras of the present time cycle were born, including Lord Mahavira.
Other Kshetras in Jain Cosmology
- Airaavat Kshetra (Airāvat Kṣetra):
- Located opposite the Bharat Kshetra on Jambudvipa. - It is also a land where human beings live and where Tirthankaras are born. - The conditions and time cycles are similar to Bharat Kshetra but are considered a mirrored region.
- Mahavideha Kshetra (Mahāvideha Kṣetra):
- Situated in the center of Jambudvipa, between Bharat and Airavat Kshetras. - It is considered a holy land where Tirthankaras continuously take birth. - According to Jain belief, even in the present time cycle (Avasarpini), Tirthankaras are present and preaching in Mahavideha Kshetra, whereas in Bharat and Airavat Kshetras, no new Tirthankaras will be born until the next cycle.
- Haimavat Kshetra (Haimavat Kṣetra):
- These are smaller regions lying between Bharat, Mahavideha, and Airavat Kshetras. - Less spiritually significant, and not the birthplace of Tirthankaras.
Summary Table:
| Kshetra | Significance | |----------------------|---------------------------------------------------------| | Bharat Kshetra | Present human world, land of 24 Tirthankaras | | Airavat Kshetra | Mirrored region, also birthplace of Tirthankaras | | Mahavideha Kshetra | Continuous presence of Tirthankaras (presently active) | | Haimavat Kshetra | Intermediate regions, not birthplace of Tirthankaras |
Importance in Jain Practice
Jains believe that Bharat, Airavat, and Mahavideha Kshetras are the only places in the current cosmic cycle where humans can achieve moksha (liberation). Among these, Mahavideha Kshetra is unique as it always has living Tirthankaras, making it highly revered. This cosmological understanding shapes Jain spiritual aspirations and their view of time, geography, and the opportunity for liberation.
