If someone does nidaan, then how should you take prayashit. Is saying vosirami/ michhami dukkadam enough

In Jain dharma, nidān and prāyaścitta are both very serious topics, so the answer is:

Only saying “vosirāmi” or “Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṃ” by words is not enough, unless it is joined with real inner repentance and a clear decision not to repeat the fault.

    ---

    1. What is nidān?

    In simple Jain terms:

    • Nidān = planning or desiring a future sinful or sense‑enjoying act in your mind.
    - e.g. “Next month I will surely enjoy this thing, even if it breaks my vow”, or “I will definitely do this paap later.”
    • This strengthens karmic bondage, because:
    - you are repeatedly enjoying the wrong act in thought, - you are fixing a clear intention for it.

So nidān is heavier than just a passing thought; it is planned, cherished intention.

    ---

    2. What is proper prāyaścitta for nidān?

For true Jain prāyaścitta (atonement), the traditional steps are:

    1. Alochana (confession)

    - Admit clearly before the Jina (in front of idol) or in front of Guru / elder or at least in your mind during pratikraman: “I have done nidān of such‑and‑such, this is a fault.”

    1. Real remorse (khed / nirved)

    - Feel from heart: “This was wrong, it harms my soul, I do not want this again.”

    1. Vosirāmi / giving it up

    - “Vosirāmi” literally = I drop it / I give up this fault. - You mentally cut off that nidān: “From this moment I give up that plan / desire.”

    1. Firm resolve not to repeat (pratyākhyān / pachchakkhan)

    - Take a clear inner vow: “I will not do such nidān again. If such thought comes, I will stop it immediately.”

    1. Supportive practice (if fault is strong)

    - Do proper samayik + pratikraman specially remembering this nidān. - If possible, under guidance of Guru / learned elder, take some extra prāyaścitta, like: - 1–2 samayik specially for this, - upvās / ayambil / ekāsan, - extra Navkar jaap with bhav, - more carefulness in related area (e.g. if nidān was about food, sense‑pleasure, money, etc.).

Without these inner steps, just saying any word is incomplete.

    ---

    3. Where do “Vosirāmi” and “Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṃ” fit?

    • Vosirāmi is usually part of pratikraman language – “I abandon this fault.”
It is one step: the act of inner dropping.
    • Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṃ is mainly:
    - asking forgiveness from all beings, - and forgiving others. You can read more here

    So:

    • If you have done nidān and then only casually say:
    - “Vosirāmi” or - “Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṃ” without: - clear confession, - real regret, - and firm resolve not to repeat, then prāyaścitta is not complete.
    • If you say them with full awareness and the above steps in your mind, then:
    - they can be part of true prāyaścitta, - because the important thing is inner bhāv, not just the word.

    ---

    4. Simple way to do prāyaścitta yourself

If you have done nidān and have no Guru nearby, you can do like this, calmly:

    1. Sit for a short samayik or at least 5–10 minutes in quiet.
    2. Remember the nidān in detail and say mentally:

    - “This nidān was wrong. I confess it.”

    1. Feel true regret:

“I harmed my own soul by this plan / desire.”

    1. Say from heart:

    - “Vosirāmi – I now drop this nidān.” - “Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṃ – may this fault be forgiven; I will not repeat it.”

    1. Take a small, practical resolve:

    - e.g. “Whenever such thought comes, I will at once recite Navkar 9 times and stop thinking further.”

Do this sincerely; repetition with bhāv makes the prāyaścitta stronger and slowly dissolves that nidān.

    ---

Summary: For nidān, mere verbal “Vosirāmi / Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṃ” is not enough if it is mechanical. True Jain prāyaścitta needs confession, real repentance, abandonment of the nidān, and firm resolve not to repeat, supported by samayik / pratikraman or other atonements as per capacity and guru’s guidance.
