    Significance of fagan feri

    5 months ago 2188

“Fagan Feri” usually refers to the special yatra (pilgrimage) done in the Jain month of Fagan (Falgun), especially:

    • Palitana (Shatrunjay) Fagun Sud Teras yatra / “Chha Gaon Feri”
    • Other Fagan fairs/feris at certain tirths (like Siddhavarkut, etc.)

Below is the simple Jain understanding and significance.

    ---

    1. What does “Fagan Feri” mean?

    • Fagan / Falgun – last month of the Jain (Hindu) lunar year, usually Feb–March.
    • Feri – going on yatra/pilgrimage (pad-yatra) to tirths, doing multiple rounds / routes with bhakti.

So “Fagan Feri” = the special tirth-yatra done in the month of Fagan, with strong bhakti, vrata, and niyam.

    ---

    2. Main example: Palitana Fagun Sud Teras Yatra

On Fagun Sud 13 (Teras) at Shatrunjay Mahatirth – Palitana, lakhs of Jains go for a big yatra often called “Chha Gaon Feri”.

    Traditional belief:

    • On this day, at Bhadva’s Dungar (Palitana):
    - Shyambh Kumar & Pradhyumn Kumar attained Moksha - Along with 8.5 crore munis
    • Because of this, doing yatra on this day is considered extremely punyayi and moksha-upkari.

    3. Spiritual significance in Jain terms

Why is Fagan Feri, especially at Palitana, considered so great?

    1. Siddha-bhoomi smaran

You walk on the hill where countless souls became Siddha. Constant remembrance of: - “Here so many attained Moksha, I also want true Moksha.” - This deepens samyag-darshan (right faith).

    1. Tirth-bhakti & guru-bhakti

Feri is done with: - Stavan, navkar, logassa, bhakti-pads - Vinay towards Tirthankar, Acharya, sadhus, and Siddhas This vinay-bhakti is a strong destroyer of paap.

    1. Tap (austerity) and sajag jeevan

Many observe niyam such as: - White clothes, simple living - No food till Siddhavadh derasar darshan (for Palitana 6 Gaon yatra) - Avoiding talking, joking, phones, etc. – staying in dharm-bhav This becomes a combination of tirth-yatra + anashan/upvas-bhav + dhyan-bhav.

    1. Saṅgh yatra – collective punya

When many Jains together: - Walk with bhakti - Encourage each other in dharma The sangh-bhav multiplies the punya of each individual and inspires future generations.

    ---

    4. Other Fagan Feris

    Apart from Palitana:

    • Some tirths (like Shri Siddhavarkut on Narmada) have fairs/yatras from Fagan Sud 13–15 with large gatherings, where many great souls are believed to have attained moksha.
You can read about Siddhavarkut tirth here
    • Local sanghs sometimes arrange “Fagan Feri” to nearby tirths / derasars in this month with extra bhakti, tap, and prabhavna.

    ---

    5. Typical niyam followed (may vary by sangh)

These are common practices in many Shvetambar sanghs (details can vary):

    • Dress:
    - Gents: full white - Ladies: simple, preferably white or sober dress suitable for tirth
    • Ahimsa & maryada:
    - No loud music, dance, picnic-style behavior - No eating on the hill / within certain areas till main darshan is complete
    • Bhav:
    - Chanting Navkar, stavans - Maintaining shanti, vinay, and tirth-bhakti instead of gossip

Digambar Jains may also have Fagan-based feris and fairs at different siddha-kshetras with similar focus on moksha-bhoomi smaran, tap, and bhakti, though the exact dates, places and rituals can differ by tradition.

    ---

    6. Essence in one line

Fagan Feri = using the holy month of Falgun for intense tirth-yatra, bhakti and tap, remembering the countless souls who attained Moksha, and strengthening our own desire and effort for liberation.
