before going to bed why do you count 7 Navkars

    8 months ago 288

Before sleeping, many Jains recite the Navkar Mantra 7 times because this number has special spiritual and symbolic meaning in Jain dharma. It is a traditional maryādā, not a strict scriptural rule, but it is widely followed.

Here are simple Jain reasons behind “7 Navkars” at night:

    1. Reminder of 7 Tattvas (fundamental truths)

Jain philosophy talks about 7 main tattvas: - Jiva (soul) - Ajiva (non‑soul) - Asrava (inflow of karma) - Bandh (bondage of karma) - Samvar (stopping karmic inflow) - Nirjara (shedding karma) - Moksha (liberation) Chanting Navkar 7 times is seen as honoring and remembering these 7 steps of the soul’s journey.

    1. Ending the day with Shuddha Bhavna

The whole day we may do many mistakes in mind, speech, and body. By calmly saying Navkar 7 times: - mind becomes peaceful, - anger / worry cools down, - we sleep with feelings of respect, humility, and forgiveness instead of negativity.

    1. Connection with many “7” in Jain tradition

In Jain teachings we also hear of: - 7 types of suffering, - 7 upper regions (Urdhva Lok), etc. So 7 is taken as a number of “completeness” and upliftment. 7 Navkars before sleep symbolizes rising above worldly worries and ending the day on a spiritually “complete” note.

    1. Simple and practical niyam

Having a fixed count (like 7) helps us: - build a daily habit of prayer, - avoid laziness (“I’ll do it tomorrow”), - give at least a few focused minutes to dharma every night. Elders teach children “at least 7 Navkars before sleeping” so that, lifelong, they don’t sleep without remembering Panch Parmeshthi.

    1. Digambar–Shwetambar view

    - Both traditions accept Navkar as the main mantra. - Counting exactly 7 times at night is a common family / sangh tradition, not a major doctrinal difference. - The spirit is same in both: end the day in remembrance of Arihant, Siddha, Acharya, Upadhyay, and all Sadhus.

In short: We count 7 Navkars before bed to close the day with repentance, purity, and remembrance of the 7 tattvas and Panch Parmeshthi, so that we sleep with a peaceful and spiritually uplifted mind.
