In Jainism, “Abhavya jīv” (अभाव्य जीव) means:

• A soul incapable of attaining moksha (liberation).
• “Abhavya” = not bhavya → not fit / not capable for liberation.
• Such a jiva will never get samyak darshan (right faith), in any birth, and therefore can never complete the path of right faith, right knowledge and right conduct.

In simple words

Jivas are of two main types:

1. Bhavya jīv –

- Can get samyak darshan someday - Can walk on the path to moksha - Has real spiritual potential

1. Abhavya jīv –

- Will never get true right faith - However many births it takes, will always remain in saṁsār - Spiritually closed, due to its own deep mithyātva and karmas

Both Digambar and Shvetambar accept this basic definition:

• Bhavya = capable of moksha
• Abhavya = incapable of moksha

Some details of explanations differ in their commentaries, but the core meaning is the same in both traditions.

Important practical point

If a person even worries about liberation, thinks about right belief, karmas, moksha, and feels respect for true dharma, Jain ācāryas say such a soul is Bhavya, not Abhavya. An Abhavya jiva never has genuine interest or faith in moksha at any time.
