    Please explain Jain cosmic man

    8 months ago 198

In Jainism, the “cosmic man” is called Loka‑puruṣha (or Lokapurusha).

    1. What is Jain Cosmic Man?

    • Jain scriptures describe the shape of the universe (loka) as similar to a standing human figure:
    - Legs apart - Hands placed on the waist or near the hips
    • This human‑shaped outline is only a map of the universe, not a god or a person.
    • Inside this outline, all worlds and beings exist.

You can read a simple description here

    2. Three main regions in the Cosmic Man

Inside this “cosmic man” the Jain universe is divided into three parts:

    1. Adho Loka – Lower World (Hells)

    - Placed in the lower part / legs of the cosmic man. - Contains many hellish regions, where beings suffer due to their bad karma.

    1. Madhya Loka – Middle World (Human World)

    - Located around the waist of the cosmic man. - Here live humans, animals, plants, etc. - This is the smallest portion of the universe, but spiritually the most important, because - Only in Madhya Loka and only in human birth, moksha (liberation) is possible.

    1. Urdhva Loka – Upper World (Heavens)

    - Found in the chest and upper part of the cosmic man. - Different levels of heavens, where celestial beings (devas) live and enjoy pleasure due to their good karma.

Above the top of this cosmic man, at the “forehead region,” is Siddha‑śilā – the crescent‑shaped region where liberated souls (Siddhas) reside forever, beyond all rebirth.

    3. Purpose and spiritual meaning

    • The cosmic man visually teaches:
    - The universe is finite in size, but without beginning or end in time. - Out of the vast space of existence, the chance of a human birth in Madhya Loka is very rare. - Therefore, human life is extremely precious and should be used for: - Reducing passions, - Following ahiṁsā (non‑violence), - Practising right faith, right knowledge and right conduct, - Moving towards moksha.

    4. Digambar and Shvetambar view

    • Both Digambar and Shvetambar traditions accept:
    - The universe shaped like a cosmic man. - The three‑world structure (upper, middle, lower). - Moksha possible only for humans in Madhya Loka.
    • Differences, if any, are in detailed drawings, counts of specific heavens/hells or technical cosmological terms, not in the basic idea of the cosmic man.

In simple words: Jain cosmic man = a diagram of the whole universe in the shape of a standing human, showing where all hells, human worlds, heavens and finally the abode of liberated souls are located.
