In Jainism, “human” (manushya) is understood in a few ways:

1. As one of the 4 gati (destinies)

Every soul can take birth in only four main states: - Deva gati – heavenly beings - Manushya gati – human beings - Tiryanch gati – animals, birds, plants, tiny beings - Narak gati – hell beings So “human” is one of these four gatis.

1. Number of human types (yonis) in Jain counting

Some Jain texts (like Saat Laakh / 84‑lakh yoni descriptions) say there are 14 lakh (1.4 million) types of human birth-forms within the total 84 lakh (8.4 million) life‑forms. This means: there are many varieties/conditions of human existence, not just one simple “human”.

- Among all gatis, human birth is the best because only as a human can the soul practice full religion and attain moksha. - So Jain Dharma teaches: use this rare human life for right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct.
