Or is there a reframing where enlightenment in this era means something different than keval-jñān?

In Jain doctrine there isn’t a second, “smaller” enlightenment that replaces keval‑jñān. The word “enlightenment” in modern English is just being used in different ways.

A few key points in simple terms:

    1. Keval‑jñān = the only full “enlightenment”

    - It is infinite, perfect, omniscient knowledge. - It arises only when the four ghāti karmas are completely destroyed. - This definition is the same in both Digambar and Shvetāmbara traditions. ( jainknowledge.com)

    1. Our era vs. the definition

    - In the present part of the time‑cycle (avasarpinī) we are in a spiritually weak period; after Bhagwān Mahāvīr there are no kevalīs on this earth. - But the nature of keval‑jñān has not changed. Only its practical attainability for ordinary souls in this era is different (effectively impossible for us right now), not the meaning of the state itself.

    1. What people often call “enlightenment” today

In modern spiritual talk, “enlightenment” is often used for: - getting samyak‑darshan (right vision/faith), or - a deep inner shift, reduction of anger, greed, ego, etc., or - high levels on the guṇasthānaks (spiritual stages).

All of these are very important Jain goals, but they are still far below keval‑jñān. They are steps on the path, not the final omniscient state.

    1. A helpful reframing within Jainism

If we want to “reframe” in a Jain‑faithful way, we can say for this era:

    - Practical aim for us: - gain samyak‑darshan, - purify samyak‑jñān and samyak‑chāritra, - climb the guṇasthānaks as far as we realistically can. - Ultimate definition remains: “Enlightenment in the fullest Jain sense” still means keval‑jñān leading to moksha, not something else.

So: in strict Jain terms, enlightenment does not mean something different from keval‑jñān in this era; only people’s loose usage of the English word is different. The doctrinal meaning of keval‑jñān is fixed and unchanged.
