Can samyaktva be eclipsed ? If yes, what happens when it is eclipsed?

Yes, samyaktva (samyak‑darshan / samkit) can be eclipsed. Jain scriptures describe this very clearly.

    1. Can samyaktva be eclipsed?

    Yes.

Samyaktva arises when darshan‑mohaniya karma is weakened or destroyed. As long as all darshan‑mohaniya is not totally destroyed (i.e. till one gets kṣāyik samyak‑darshan), it can be:

    • Reduced / covered again by rising deluding karma
    • Or even lost, and mithyātva (wrong belief) can re‑appear

    So:

    • Aupaśamik / Kṣayopaśamik samyaktva – can be eclipsed and lost
    • Kṣāyik samyaktva – can never be eclipsed or lost (it is permanent till moksha)

Both Digambar and Shvetambar agree on this basic principle, though technical details (gunasthān sequence, terminology) may vary slightly.

    ---

    2. What happens when samyaktva is eclipsed?

When samyaktva is eclipsed by fresh rise of mohaniya‑karma, these changes occur:

    1. Right faith becomes disturbed

    - Clarity about tattvas (jīva, ajīva, āsrava, bandha, saṃvara, nirjarā, mokṣa) becomes weak. - Firm, doubt‑free conviction turns into doubt, confusion, or carelessness.

    1. Mithyātva or mixed views arise

    - One may start: - Considering non‑Jina‑shāsan views as equal or higher, - Mixing superstitions/false beliefs with Jain tattva, - Or becoming indifferent: “All paths are same, why be strict?”

    1. Fall in guṇasthān (spiritual stage)

    - Soul can drop from samyag‑dṛṣṭi guṇasthāns back towards mithyātva guṇasthāns. - This means: spiritual progress made under that (temporary) samyaktva is no more active; one again moves under stronger delusion.

    1. Change in inner qualities

The eight signs of samyak‑darshan (niśaṅkitā, niṣkāṅkṣitā, nirvicikitsā, etc.) become weak or disappear: - Doubt comes back - Craving for worldly gain from religion returns - Aversion towards true sādhus, śāstra and discipline can appear - Affection and respect for saṅgh and dharma reduce - Interest in prabhāvanā, swādhyāy, tapa, etc. drops

    1. Heavier karmic bondage

    - Because of wrong belief / negligence, more mohaniya, jñānāvaraṇ, darśanāvaraṇ, antarāya karmas bind in a strong way. - Future chances of regaining samyaktva become more difficult (though never impossible).

    ---

    3. Summary in simple words

    • Yes, samyaktva can be eclipsed until it becomes fully kṣāyik (permanent).
    • When eclipsed:
    - Right faith becomes shaky or disappears, - Wrong or mixed beliefs arise, - The soul falls from higher to lower spiritual stages, - Deluding karmas become strong again, - Progress towards moksha slows down or stops for that time.

Therefore Jain dharma emphasizes great care (apramāda), satsang, regular pratikraman, and protection of one’s faith, so that temporary samyaktva steadily moves towards kṣāyik samyaktva, which can never be eclipsed.
