Can I marry to 4 generation from father side

    7 months ago 158

In Jain dharma and in Indian law, this kind of marriage is generally not allowed.

    1. Jain viewpoint (religious/custom side)

    • Jain scriptures mainly stress: ahiṁsā, purity, good conduct.
    • For marriage rules (kinship, gotra, generations), Jains mostly follow traditional community maryādā (customs).
    • These customs are very strict about not marrying close blood relations, especially on the father’s side (same vansh / close generations).
    • In most Jain communities, a match within a few generations on the father’s side is treated like a close family relation and avoided.

    2. Legal viewpoint (India – Hindu Marriage Act, which also applies to most Jains in practice)

    • Law says you cannot marry if you are “sapinda” to each other.
    • Sapinda = up to 5 generations from the father’s side (counting you as the first generation).
    • So anyone within 4 generations on the father’s side is still inside this prohibited range.
    • That means: marriage to a 4th‑generation relation on the father’s side is normally legally prohibited, unless there is some very specific, recognized custom to allow it (rare, and you would need proper legal/community guidance).

    3. What you should do in practice

    • From a Jain dharma + Indian law perspective, such a marriage should be treated as not permissible.
    • You should verify the exact relationship with:
    - your parents/elders, - your local Jain saṅgh leader / pandit, and - a local lawyer (to be 100% sure about the legal side before taking any step).
