Is it ok to eat soonth
In Jainism, dietary guidelines are primarily centered around the principle of ahiṃsā (non-violence) and minimizing harm to living beings, including plants. Soonṭh (dry ginger powder) is made from ginger root, which is considered an underground vegetable. Traditionally, Jain dietary practice discourages the consumption of all underground vegetables (such as potatoes, onions, garlic, ginger, etc.) because uprooting these plants kills the entire plant and disturbs many life forms living in the soil.
Therefore, consuming soonṭh is generally not considered permissible in strict Jain dietary practice, especially among Śvetāmbara and Digambara followers who observe a more rigorous diet. However, some lay Jains may consume such items due to regional or personal variations, but ideally, it is avoided to follow the principles of non-violence as closely as possible.
