    The sutra pnchimdriya meaning

    7 months ago 159

“Panchindriya / Panchindiya” is connected with five senses and also with a special Panchindiya Sutra.

Since you wrote “sutra panchimdriya meaning”, I’ll explain the Panchindiya Sutra meaning briefly.

    ---

    1. Original Panchindiya Sutra (Prakrit)

    Panchindiya-samvarano, taha nava-viha-bambhachera-guttidharo. Chauviha-kasāya-mukko, iah atthārasa-gunehim sañjutto. ……1

    Pancha-mahavvaya-jutto, pancha-vihāyāra-pālaṇa-samattho. Pancha-samio tigutto, chhattīsa-guno guru majjha. ……2

(Spelling may vary slightly in different books and traditions.)

You can read it nicely presented here

    ---

    2. Simple Meaning (Arth) in English

This sutra praises the ideal Jain Guru (Āchārya) and his 36 qualities.

    First verse

“Panchindiya-samvarano” – The Guru has complete control over the five senses (touch, taste, smell, sight, hearing). He never misuses them for pleasures or sins.

“Taha nava-viha-bambhachera-guttidharo” – He observes the nine kinds of protection of brahmacharya (total celibacy). He carefully follows all rules that protect purity.

“Chauviha-kasāya-mukko” – He is free from the four kashāyas: anger, pride (ego), deceit, and greed.

    “Iah atthārasa-gunehim sañjutto” – Because of this, he has 18 qualities (5 sense-control + 9 brahmacharya-protections + 4 passions removed).

    ---

    Second verse

“Pancha-mahavvaya-jutto” – He follows the 5 Mahāvratas (great vows): ahimsā, satya, asteya, brahmacharya, aparigraha.

“Pancha-vihāyāra-pālaṇa-samattho” – He is able to practice the 5 āchāras (codes of conduct): right knowledge conduct, right faith conduct, right conduct, austerity conduct, and energy/strength conduct.

“Pancha-samio tigutto” – He follows 5 samitis (carefulness in walking, speaking, eating, handling things, and disposing waste) and 3 guptis (control of mind, speech, body).

“Chhattīsa-guno guru majjha” – Such a Guru has 36 qualities in total, and that Guru is my ideal Guru.

    ---

    3. Essence of the Sutra

    • A true Jain Guru is one who:
    - Controls all five senses fully - Keeps perfect celibacy - Is free from anger, ego, deceit, greed - Practices five great vows, five codes of conduct, five carefulnesses, and three controls
    • By remembering such a Guru, we develop respect, discipline and self-control in our own life.

    ---

    4. About traditions (Digambar / Shvetambar)

    • Both Digambar and Shvetambar traditions accept the spirit of this sutra:
praise of a Guru with 36 qualities.
    • Minor differences may exist in pronunciation or exact wording,
but the meaning and purpose are the same: to remember and invoke the pure, disciplined Jain Guru.

    ---

If you only wanted the meaning of the word “Panchindriya”: it simply means “five senses” (touch, taste, smell, sight, hearing) in Jainism.
