Tricks for easy remembering
I’ll share some very simple, practical “memory tricks” that work well for Jain studies (sutras, lists, tattvas, etc.). You can use them for school study also.
1. Break into Small Parts (Khanda-Khanda)
Never try to remember a long thing at once.- Take 1 line or 1 small point.
- Repeat it 5–10 times slowly.
- Then add the next line.
- Join them: line 1 + line 2, then add line 3, and so on.
This is how many people memorize:
- Namokar Mantra
- Bhaktāmara Stotra
- Tattva list (9 tattvas, 7 tattvas, etc.)
---
2. Make Groups (Vargikaran)
Our brain remembers groups better than long lists.Example: 9 Tattvas Group as:
- Shubha: Jīva, Ajīva
- Karma-related: Āsrava, Bandh, Saṃvar, Nirjarā, Mokṣa
- Extra: Puṇya, Pāp (or as per your tradition)
Do the same with:
- 12 Vrats
- 5 Mahāvrats
- 5 Anuvrats
- 3 Guptis
- 5 Samitis
---
3. First-Letter Codes
Make a small “code word” from the first letters.Example: 5 Mahāvrat (Digambar):
- Ahimsā
- Satya
- Asteya
- Brahmacharya
- Aparigraha
Take first letters: A S A B A You can make a simple phrase or just remember “ASABA”.
You can do this for:
- 14 Guṇasthānaks
- 10 Lakṣaṇ of Dharma
- 4 Kaṣāyas (K, M, M, L) – Krodh, Māna, Māyā, Lobha
---
4. Use Daily Recitation (Nitya Paath)
Whatever you want to remember, recite daily.- Morning: once
- Night: once
Even 2–3 minutes daily is more powerful than 1 hour only on Sunday.
For example:
- Choose 1 sutra or 1 stotra.
- Recite same thing every day for 21 or 48 days.
- It becomes almost impossible to forget.
---
5. Teach Someone (Adhyayan + Adhyāpan)
If possible, explain to:- Younger brother/sister
- Friend
- Family member
When you teach:
- Your own understanding becomes clear.
- Memory becomes very strong.
You can say:
- “There are 9 tattvas, they are…”
- “The 5 great vows are…”
---
6. Connect With Meaning (Arth-Smruti)
If you know only words, you forget fast. If you know meaning, your mind holds it tightly.Example: Ahimsā = not hurting any living being Satya = speaking truth When you remember meaning, the word comes naturally.
So:
- Learn short, simple meanings.
- Repeat meaning along with sutra.
---
7. Write and Speak Together
Use three steps:- Read it.
- Say it aloud (slowly, clearly).
- Write it from memory.
This helps a lot for:
- Sutras
- Jain terms in exams
- Names of Āchāryas, Ganadhars, Tirthankars, etc.
---
8. Use Time Before Sleep
Just before sleeping:- Revise in mind what you learnt today.
- Repeat the list or sutra once.
Whatever is revised before sleep goes deeper into memory.

If you tell me what exactly you want to remember (e.g., 9 tattvas, 14 guṇasthān, some stotra, or exam topics), I can give you very specific “memory tricks” for that particular topic.
