Jap to be done
In Jain dharma, the best and safest jap (japa) to do every day is:
- Navkār (Namokār) Mahāmantra
This is the main Jain mantra, accepted equally by both Digambar and Shwetambar.
Text (Prakrit):
Simple meaning: - I bow to Arihants (kevali bhagwān who destroyed inner passions). - I bow to Siddhas (liberated souls). - I bow to Āchāryas (heads of the Jain order). - I bow to Upādhyāyas (spiritual teachers). - I bow to all Sādhus and Sādhvīs. This five‑fold bowing destroys sins (pāpa‑karma) and is the highest of all auspicious things.
How to do jap simply: - Sit clean and calm (morning is best, but any time is okay). - Close eyes or keep them softly open. - Chant slowly, understanding you are bowing to the highest souls. - Start with 9, 27 or 108 times daily – as per your capacity. - Do it without asking for material things; just with bhāva: “Let my bad karmas reduce, let me move towards right faith and right conduct.”

- Other good Jain japs (optional, if you wish later):
- Uvasaggaharam Stotra – for removal of obstacles (Bhagwān Pārshvanāth). - Bhaktāmbar Stotra – for strength, protection, inner peace (Bhagwān Ādināth).
These should also always be started after doing Navkār first.

Main Jain principle about jap:
- Jap is for shuddhi of soul and destruction of karma,
- Both Digambar and Shwetambar agree on the greatness of Navkār Mantra as the first and highest jap.
If you just start with daily Navkār jap with pure heart, that alone is a very complete and powerful Jain practice.
