What form of 2SLGBTGIA+ is a sin?

    7 months ago 131

In Jain Dharma, the question is not “which form of 2SLGBTQIA+ is a sin,” but what kinds of sexual conduct are sinful for any person, whatever their orientation or identity.

    Very simply:

    1. All souls are equal

    - Every jiva (soul) is beginningless, genderless at the ultimate level, and capable of liberation. - Jainism does not teach hatred or violence toward anyone because of orientation or identity. - To insult, harm, or discriminate with anger or hatred is itself hiṁsā (violence) and therefore pāpa (sin).

    1. What is “sinful” in sexual matters in Jainism?

Jain texts focus on brahmacharya (sexual restraint), not on modern labels like LGBT, straight, etc. Conduct becomes sinful when it: - inflames passions (kashāya), - involves violence, force, cheating, or exploitation, - breaks one’s vows (e.g., adultery, secret affairs), - becomes excessive indulgence and attachment.

For: - Monks / nuns: Any sexual activity (including thoughts deliberately encouraged) is a serious breach of brahmacharya—sinful, regardless of partner or orientation. - Laypeople: limited sex is allowed only with one’s spouse, with restraint and non‑violence. Adultery, abuse, coercion, pornography, excessive passion, etc. are faults, again regardless of whether the person is straight or queer.

    1. Orientation vs. action

    - Having a particular inclination or orientation (whether towards same sex, opposite sex, or both) is treated in Jain thinking more like a result of past karmas and mental tendencies, not automatically as sin. - Pāpa comes from what we do with body, speech, and mind: - hurting others, - indulging in uncontrolled passions, - breaking vows we have taken. - So the focus is on behavior and inner passions, not on the “label” of identity.

    1. So, which form is a sin?

From a Jain-dharma point of view:

    - Sinful: - Any sexual act (straight or LGBTQIA+) that involves violence, pressure, cheating, exploitation, or breaks one’s vow of fidelity or celibacy. - Any deliberate, lust‑driven indulgence that increases rāga–dveṣa (attachment–hatred) and pramāda (carelessness).

    - Not automatically sinful: - Merely being 2SLGBTQIA+ in identity or orientation. - Treating all beings with kindness, non‑violence, and respect.

    1. Important Jain attitude

    - Ahimsa applies in thought, speech, and deed. Mocking, hating, or attacking people because of their orientation is hiṁsā, and thus more clearly sinful in Jain terms than their identity itself. - Each person, whatever their identity, is encouraged to: - minimize sensual life, - avoid harm and deceit in relationships, - gradually move toward greater brahmacharya according to their capacity.

In short: Jain Dharma does not declare a particular “form of 2SLGBTQIA+” as uniquely sinful. It calls any uncontrolled, harmful, deceitful, or vow‑breaking sexual behavior sinful, and it strongly forbids hatred or violence toward any living being.
